Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet gave a boy the choice between his father and his mother. Abū ʿĪsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith. The boy’s name was Sulaym. Scholars among the Prophet’s Companions and others acted according to it, holding that when parents dispute over a child, the boy is given the choice. Aḥmad and Isḥāq said that while the child is young, the mother has the stronger claim; when the boy reaches seven years of age, he is given the choice. Hilāl ibn Abī Maymūnah was Hilāl ibn ʿAlī ibn Usāmah, a man of Madinah, from whom Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr, Mālik ibn Anas, and Fulayḥ ibn Sulaymān narrated.
