Ibn ʿAbbās reported that the Messenger of Allah did not prohibit sharecropping, but instructed people to treat one another kindly. Abū ʿĪsā said: This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ hadith. Reports from Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj are inconsistent: it is narrated from Rāfiʿ through his paternal uncles, and specifically from Zuhayr ibn Rāfiʿ, one of his uncles, with varying wordings. Reports on this subject are also narrated from Zayd ibn Thābit and Jābir.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The report differentiates a prohibition of exploitative terms from sharecropping itself.
