Abu Ayyub reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days. When they meet, each turns away. The better of the two is the one who begins with the greeting of peace.”
Chapter 450

Abu Hurayra reported: A man passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting in a gathering and said, “Peace be upon you.” He said, “Ten good deeds.” Another man passed by and said, “Peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy.” He said, “Twenty good deeds.” Another man passed by and said, “Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.” He said, “Thirty good deeds.” Then a man from the gathering stood up without offering the greeting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “How quickly your companion has forgotten! When one of you comes to a gathering, let him offer the greeting. If he decides to sit, let him sit; and when he gets up, let him offer the greeting. The first greeting is no more deserving than the last.”

Umar said: I was riding behind Abu Bakr when he passed a group of people and said, “Peace be upon you.” They replied, “Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy.” He said, “Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy,” and they replied, “Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.” Abu Bakr said, “Today the people have surpassed us by a great deal.”

Aisha reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Jews do not envy you for anything as much as they envy you for the greeting of peace and saying ‘Amen.’”

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Al-Salam is one of the names of Allah Most High, which Allah placed on earth, so spread the greeting of peace among yourselves.”

Ibn Masud said: They used to pray behind the Prophet ﷺ. Someone said, “Peace be upon Allah.” When the Prophet ﷺ finished the prayer, he said, “Who said, ‘Peace be upon Allah’? Allah is al-Salam. Rather, say: ‘All greetings, prayers, and good words belong to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s righteous servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.’” They used to learn it just as one of you learns a sura of the Qur’an.

And when he dies, accompany him.”

Abd al-Rahman ibn Shibl said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: “A rider should greet a person on foot; a person on foot should greet someone seated; and the smaller group should greet the larger group. Whoever returns the greeting, it is for him; whoever does not return it, receives nothing.”

Hajjaj ibn Bassam Abu Qurra al-Khurasani said: I saw Anas pass by us in Basra, gesture toward us with his hand, and offer the greeting. He had vitiligo. I saw al-Hasan dyeing his hair yellow while wearing a black turban. Asma said: The Prophet ﷺ gestured with his hand to the women in greeting.
