Asking Permission

Abdullah ibn Yusuf informed us: Malik informed us. Ismail narrated to us, saying: Malik told me, from Nafi, from Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When there are three people, two should not converse privately to the exclusion of the third.

Abdullah ibn Sabbah narrated to us: Mutamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, saying: I heard my father say: I heard Anas ibn Malik say: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, confided a secret to me, and I never told anyone after him. Umm Sulaym asked me about it, but I did not tell her either.

Uthman narrated to us: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Abu Wail, from Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you are three, two men should not converse privately apart from the third, until you are among other people, lest it grieve him.

Abdan narrated to us, from Abu Hamzah, from al-Amash, from Shaqiq, from Abdullah, who said: One day the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, distributed something. A man from the Ansar said, ‘This is a distribution not intended for the sake of Allah.’ I said, ‘By Allah, I will tell the Prophet.’ I went to him while he was among a gathering and spoke privately to him. He became angry until his face reddened, then said, ‘May Allah have mercy on Moses. He was hurt with worse than this, and he remained patient.’

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Jafar narrated to us: Shubah narrated to us, from Abd al-Aziz, from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The prayer was called, while a man was conversing privately with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He continued speaking with him until his Companions fell asleep. Then he stood and prayed.

Abu Nuaim narrated to us: Ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: Do not leave a fire burning in your houses when you go to sleep.

Muhammad ibn al-Ala narrated to us: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Burayd ibn Abdullah, from Abu Burdah, from Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: A house in Medina burned at night while its occupants were inside. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was told about them and said, ‘This fire is an enemy to you. When you go to sleep, extinguish it.’

Qutaybah narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Kathir, from Ata, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Cover the vessels, close the doors, and extinguish the lamps, for a little mouse may drag away the wick and burn the people of the house.

Hassan ibn Abi Abbad narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us, from Ata, from Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Extinguish the lamps at night when you go to bed, close the doors, tie up the waterskins, and cover food and drink. Hammam said: I think he also said, ‘even with a stick laid across it.’

Yahya ibn Qazah narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Sad narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Said ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: The natural practices are five: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, plucking the armpit hair, trimming the moustache, and clipping the nails.

Abu al-Yaman informed us: Shuayb ibn Abi Hamzah informed us: Abu al-Zinad narrated to us, from al-Araj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Abraham circumcised himself at the age of eighty, using an adze. Qutaybah narrated to us: al-Mughirah narrated to us, from Abu al-Zinad, who said, ‘with the qadum’—a place name with a doubled d.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahim informed us: Abbad ibn Musa informed us: Ismail ibn Jafar narrated to us, from Israil, from Abu Ishaq, from Said ibn Jubayr, who said: Ibn Abbas was asked, ‘How old were you when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died?’ He replied, ‘I had been circumcised then.’ He said: They would not circumcise a man until he reached maturity.

Ibn Idris said, from his father, from Abu Ishaq, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died when I had been circumcised.

Yahya ibn Bukayr narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman informed me that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If any of you takes an oath and says in it, ‘By al-Lat and al-Uzza,’ let him say, ‘There is no god but Allah.’ And if anyone says to his companion, ‘Come, let us gamble,’ let him give charity.

Abu Nuaim narrated to us: Ishaq—meaning Ibn Said—narrated to us, from Said, from Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: I saw myself building a shelter with my own hands to protect me from the rain and shade me from the sun. No one among Allah’s creation helped me with it.

Ali ibn Abdullah narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us. Amr said: Ibn Umar said: By Allah, I have not laid one brick upon another nor planted a palm tree since the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died. Sufyan said: I mentioned this to one of his family, who said, ‘By Allah, he did build a house.’ Sufyan said: I replied, ‘Perhaps he meant before he built it.’
