Asking Permission

Abu Nuaim narrated to us: Umar ibn Dharr narrated to us. And Muhammad ibn Muqatil narrated to us: Abdullah informed us: Umar ibn Dharr informed us: Mujahid informed us, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: I entered with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he found milk in a cup. He said, ‘Abu Hirr, go to the people of the Suffah and invite them to me.’ I went and invited them. They came, asked permission, and were given permission to enter.

Ali ibn al-Jad narrated to us: Shubah informed us, from Sayyar, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who passed by some boys, greeted them, and said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do this.

Abdullah ibn Maslamah narrated to us: Ibn Abi Hazim narrated to us, from his father, from Sahl, who said: We used to rejoice on Fridays. I asked, ‘Why?’ He replied: We had an old woman who would send someone to Budaah—Ibn Maslamah said it was a date grove in Medina—and take some chard roots, put them in a pot, and grind in some barley grains. When we finished the Friday prayer, we would go to her and greet her, and she would serve it to us. We rejoiced because of it. We never took an afternoon nap or ate lunch until after Friday prayer.

Ibn Muqatil narrated to us: Abdullah informed us: Mamar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Aishah, Gabriel conveys greetings of peace to you.’ She said: I replied, ‘And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah.’ You see what we do not see—meaning the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Shuayb also transmitted it. Yunus and al-Numan related from al-Zuhri the addition, ‘and His blessings.’

Abu al-Walid Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us: Shubah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: I heard Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, say: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about a debt my father owed. I knocked at the door, and he said, ‘Who is it?’ I replied, ‘Me.’ He said, ‘Me, me.’ It seemed that he disliked that expression.

Ishaq ibn Mansur informed us: Abdullah ibn Numayr informed us: Ubayd Allah narrated to us, from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that a man entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was sitting in one part of it. The man prayed, then came and greeted him. The Messenger of Allah said, ‘And upon you be peace. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.’ He went back and prayed, then came and greeted him. The Prophet said, ‘And upon you be peace. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.’ On the second time, or the time after that, the man said, ‘Teach me, Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘When you rise for prayer, perform ablution thoroughly, then face the qiblah and say the takbir. Then recite whatever is easy for you of the Quran. Then bow until you are at ease in bowing. Then rise until you are standing upright. Then prostrate until you are at ease in prostration. Then rise until you are at ease sitting. Then prostrate until you are at ease in prostration. Then rise until you are at ease sitting. Do this throughout your prayer.’ Abu Usamah said at the end, ‘until you are standing upright.’

Ibn Bashshar narrated to us, saying: Yahya told me, from Ubayd Allah. Said told me, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Then rise until you are at ease sitting.

Abu Nuaim narrated to us: Zakariyya narrated to us, saying: I heard Amir say: Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman told me that Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, told him that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to her, ‘Gabriel conveys greetings of peace to you.’ She replied, ‘And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah.’

Ibrahim ibn Musa informed us: Hisham informed us, from Mamar, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: Usamah ibn Zayd informed me that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, rode a donkey with a Fadaki saddle pad and a velvet covering beneath it. He seated Usamah ibn Zayd behind him while visiting Sad ibn Ubadah among Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj, before the Battle of Badr. He passed a gathering containing a mixture of Muslims, idol-worshipping polytheists, and Jews. Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul was among them, and Abdullah ibn Rawahah was also in the gathering. When dust from the animal reached the gathering, Abdullah ibn Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said, ‘Do not cover us with dust.’ The Prophet greeted them, stopped, dismounted, invited them to Allah, and recited the Quran to them. Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul said, ‘Man, nothing is better than this, if what you say is true. Do not disturb us at our gatherings; return to your place. Whoever comes to you from us, tell it to him.’ Ibn Rawahah said, ‘Come to our gatherings, for we love that.’ The Muslims, polytheists, and Jews then traded insults until they were about to attack one another. The Prophet kept calming them, then mounted his animal and went to Sad ibn Ubadah. He said, ‘Sad, did you hear what Abu Hubab said?’—meaning Abdullah ibn Ubayy—and recounted it. Sad said, ‘Pardon him, Messenger of Allah, and overlook it. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you. The people of this settlement had agreed to crown him and bind the royal turban around him. When Allah turned that away through the truth He granted you, he was choked with resentment, and that is why he behaved as you saw.’ The Prophet pardoned him.

Ibn Bukayr narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah, that Abdullah ibn Kab said: I heard Kab ibn Malik relate the events when he stayed behind from Tabuk. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade people to speak to us. I would come to the Messenger of Allah, greet him, and wonder to myself whether his lips had moved to return my greeting or not. This continued until fifty nights had passed. The Prophet announced at dawn prayer that Allah had accepted our repentance.

Abu al-Yaman informed us: Shuayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah informed me that Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: A group of Jews entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, ‘Death be upon you.’ I understood what they said and replied, ‘Death and the curse be upon you.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Easy, Aishah. Allah loves gentleness in every matter.’ I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said?’ The Messenger of Allah replied, ‘I have already said: and upon you.’

Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Malik informed us, from Abdullah ibn Dinar, from Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When the Jews greet you, one of them says, ‘Death be upon you.’ So say, ‘And upon you.’

Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Hushaym narrated to us: Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Anas informed us: Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated to us that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When the People of the Book greet you, say, ‘And upon you.’

Yusuf ibn Buhlul narrated to us: Ibn Idris narrated to us, saying: Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman told me, from Sad ibn Ubaydah, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, and Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi—we were all horsemen—and said, ‘Go until you reach the garden of Khakh, for there is a polytheist woman there carrying a letter from Hatib ibn Abi Baltaah to the polytheists.’ We caught up with her riding her camel at the place the Messenger of Allah had described. We said, ‘Where is the letter you have?’ She replied, ‘I have no letter.’ We made her camel kneel and searched her baggage, but found nothing. My two companions said, ‘We see no letter.’ I said, ‘I know that the Messenger of Allah did not lie. By the One by whom oaths are sworn, you will produce the letter or I will strip you.’ When she saw my seriousness, she reached for the waistband of her garment, which she had wrapped around herself with a cloak, and brought out the letter. We took it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said, ‘Hatib, what made you do this?’ He replied, ‘Nothing made me do it except that I believe in Allah and His Messenger. I have not changed or substituted anything. I wanted to have a favor with those people by which Allah might protect my family and property. Every one of your Companions there has someone through whom Allah protects his family and property.’ He said, ‘He has spoken the truth, so say nothing about him except good.’ Umar ibn al-Khattab said, ‘He has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike his neck.’ The Prophet said, ‘Umar, how do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do as you wish, for Paradise has become assured for you.’ Umar’s eyes filled with tears, and he said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’

Muhammad ibn Muqatil Abu al-Hasan narrated to us: Abdullah informed us: Yunus informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Ubayd Allah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah informed me that Ibn Abbas told him that Abu Sufyan ibn Harb had told him: Heraclius sent for me among a group of Quraysh who were merchants in Syria. We came to him—and he mentioned the full report. Then he called for the letter of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and it was read. It said: In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, servant of Allah and His Messenger, to Heraclius, the great ruler of the Romans. Peace be upon whoever follows guidance. To proceed:

Al-Layth said: Jafar ibn Rabiah told me, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he mentioned a man from the Children of Israel who took a piece of wood, hollowed it out, placed one thousand dinars inside it, and put a letter from himself to his creditor with them. Umar ibn Abi Salamah also related from his father, who heard Abu Hurayrah say that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: He carved a piece of wood, put the money inside it, and wrote a letter inside from so-and-so to so-and-so.

Abu al-Walid narrated to us: Shubah narrated to us, from Sad ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf, from Abu Said: The people of Qurayzah submitted to Sad’s judgment, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent for him. He came, and the Prophet said, ‘Stand for your leader’—or he said, ‘your best man.’ He sat beside the Prophet, who said, ‘These people have submitted to your judgment.’ Sad said, ‘I judge that their fighting men be killed and their children taken captive.’ The Prophet said, ‘You have judged according to the judgment of the Sovereign.’ Abu Abdullah said: One of my companions helped me understand that Abu al-Walid’s version from Abu Said said, ‘They submitted to your judgment.’

Amr ibn Asim narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, who said: I asked Anas, ‘Did the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, shake hands?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’

Yahya ibn Sulayman said: Ibn Wahb told me: Haywah informed me: Abu Aqil, Zuhrah ibn Mabdad, told me that he heard his grandfather Abdullah ibn Hisham say: We were with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was holding Umar ibn al-Khattab’s hand.

Abu Nuaim narrated to us: Sayf narrated to us, saying: I heard Mujahid say: Abdullah ibn Sakhbarah Abu Mamar told me: I heard Ibn Masud say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, taught me the tashahhud while my palm was between his palms, just as he taught me a surah from the Quran: All greetings, prayers, and good words belong to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. He was among us while we were alive; when he passed away, we said, ‘Peace’—meaning, upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
