Limits and Punishments set by Allah (Hudood)

Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Ibn ʿUyayna narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ʿUbaydullah ibn ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUtba, from Abu Hurayra and Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani, who said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “I adjure you by God to judge between us according to the Book of God.” His opponent stood. He was more learned than the first man. He said, “He is right. Judge between us according to the Book of God, and allow me to speak, Messenger of God.” The Prophet said, “Speak.” He said, “My son worked among this man’s household and committed adultery with his wife. I paid him one hundred sheep and a servant to settle the matter. I asked some men of knowledge, and they told me that my son was liable to one hundred lashes and exile for a year, and that this man’s wife was liable to stoning.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, I will judge between you according to the Book of God. The one hundred sheep and the servant are to be returned to you. Your son is liable to one hundred lashes and exile for a year. Unays, go tomorrow to this man’s wife and question her. If she confesses, stone her.” She confessed, and he stoned her.
