Chapter 44

It was narrated that Abu Bakr said: Ghundar narrated to us, from Shu‘bah, from ‘Ali ibn Mudrik, from Abu Zur‘ah, from ‘Abdullah ibn Nujayy, from his father, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.’

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: ‘Jibril (peace be upon him) arranged to come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at a certain hour, but he was late. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and found Jibril standing at the door. He said, “What kept you from coming in?” Jibril replied, “There is a dog in the house, and we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.”’

It was narrated from Abu Umamah that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him that her husband was away on a military campaign. She asked his permission to make an image of a palm tree in her house, but he refused or forbade her.
Chapter 45

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: ‘I covered a small alcove of mine—meaning its interior—with a curtain bearing images. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, he tore it down. I made two cushions from it, and I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reclining on one of them.’

Chapter 46
الْمَيَاثِرِ الْحُمْرِ

It was narrated that ‘Ali said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade gold rings and al-mitharah—that is, the red one.’

Al-mitharah is a type of saddle covering or cushion; the Arabic gloss specifies that it was red.
قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَعَنِ الْمِيثَرَةِ يَعْنِي الْحَمْرَاءَ .
Al-mitharah is a historical term for a saddle covering or cushion; the Arabic only glosses its color as red.

It was narrated that Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah said: Zayd ibn al-Hubab narrated to us; Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to us; ‘Ayyash ibn ‘Abbas al-Himyari narrated to me, from Abu Husayn al-Hajri al-Haytham, from ‘Amir al-Hajri, who said: ‘I heard Abu Rayhanah, a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to forbid riding on leopard skins.’
