Ibn ʿAbbas reported: Khalid ibn al-Walid told him that he entered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon Maymuna—who was his maternal aunt and Ibn ʿAbbas’s maternal aunt—and found a roasted dhabb with her. She served the dhabb to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he withdrew his hand from it. Khalid said: ‘Is the dhabb forbidden, Messenger of Allah?’ He replied: ‘No, but it was not found in my people’s land, and I find myself disinclined to eat it.’ Khalid said: ‘So I pulled it toward me and ate it while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at me.’

Jabir reported: I went on the Army of al-Khabt campaign, and Abu ʿUbayda was appointed commander over us. We suffered severe hunger. The sea cast up a dead fish unlike anything we had seen, called al-ʿAnbar. We ate from it for half a month. Abu ʿUbayda took one of its bones, and a rider passed beneath it. When we returned, we mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: ‘Eat the provision Allah has brought forth for you, and feed us some if you have any.’ So we sent some of it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ate it.

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘If a fly falls into one of your vessels, immerse it completely, then throw it away, for on one of its wings is a cure and on the other a disease.’ Al-Bukhari transmitted it.

Maymuna reported that a mouse fell into some clarified butter and died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about it and said: ‘Throw it and whatever is around it away, and eat the rest.’ Al-Bukhari transmitted it.

Ibn ʿUmar reported that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Kill snakes. Kill the one with two white streaks and the short-tailed one, for they blind the sight and cause miscarriages.’ ʿAbd Allah said: While I was pursuing a snake to kill it, Abu Lubaba called out to me, ‘Do not kill it!’ I said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that snakes be killed.’ He replied: ‘After that, he forbade the house snakes, which are the long-lived ones.’

Abu al-Saʾib reported: We visited Abu Saʿid al-Khudri. While we were sitting, we heard something beneath his couch. We looked and saw a snake there. I jumped up to kill it while Abu Saʿid was praying, but he gestured to me to sit, so I sat down. When he finished, he pointed to a house in the courtyard and said: ‘Do you see that house?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘A young man of ours, newly married, lived there. We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the Trench, and that young man used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission at midday to return to his family. One day he asked his permission, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Take your weapon, for I fear the Qurayza for you. The man took his weapon and returned. He found his wife standing between the two doorways. He aimed his spear at her to stab her, overcome by jealousy. She said to him: Hold back your spear and enter the house, so you can see what brought me outside. He entered and found a large snake coiled on the bed. He thrust his spear at it and impaled it. Then he went outside and planted the spear in the courtyard. The snake thrashed against it, and it was impossible to tell which died sooner: the snake or the young man. We went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened, saying: Ask Allah to bring him back to life for us. He said: Ask forgiveness for your companion. Then he said: These houses have long-term inhabitants. If you see one of them, warn it three times. If it goes away, fine; otherwise kill it, for it is a disbeliever. He told them: Go and bury your companion.’ Another narration says: ‘There are jinn in Medina who have accepted Islam. If you see one of them, warn it for three days. If it appears to you after that, kill it, for it is only a devil.’ Muslim transmitted it.

He also reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘An ant bit one of the prophets, so he ordered the ants’ nest to be brought and burned. Then Allah Most High revealed to him: One ant bit you, and you burned a community among the communities that glorify Me?’
