Abdullah ibn Sarjis reported: A man entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was leading the dawn prayer. He prayed two rak'ahs in a corner of the mosque, then joined the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) concluded the prayer, he said, “So-and-so, which of the two prayers did you count as your obligatory prayer: the one you prayed alone, or the one you prayed with us?”

Abu Humayd—or Abu Usayd—reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When one of you enters the mosque, let him say, ‘O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.’ When he leaves, let him say, ‘O Allah, I ask You for Your bounty.’ Muslim said: I heard Yahya ibn Yahya say, ‘I copied this hadith from the book of Sulayman ibn Bilal.’ He said that he had heard Yahya al-Himmani say, ‘and Abu Usayd.’

Abu Qatadah, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), reported: I entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was sitting among the people, and I sat down. He asked, ‘What prevented you from praying two rak'ahs before sitting?’ I replied, ‘Messenger of Allah, I saw you sitting, and the people were sitting.’ He said, ‘When one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit until he has prayed two rak'ahs.’

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) owed me a debt. He repaid me and added something to it. I entered the mosque, and he said to me, ‘Pray two rak'ahs.’

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: I went with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on an expedition. My camel lagged behind and became exhausted, so the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived before me. I arrived the next morning and went to the mosque, where I found him at its gate. He said, ‘Have you only just arrived?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Leave your camel, enter, and pray two rak'ahs.’ I entered, prayed, and then returned.

Ka'b ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never returned from a journey except in the daytime, arriving in the forenoon. When he arrived, he would begin at the mosque, pray two rak'ahs there, and then sit down.

Urwah reported that Aisha said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) offer the voluntary forenoon prayer, although I offer it. If the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) left an act that he loved to do, it was out of fear that people might practice it regularly and it would then be made obligatory for them.

Muadhah reported that she asked Aisha how many rak'ahs the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed for the forenoon prayer. She replied, ‘Four rak'ahs, and he would pray more as he wished.’

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla reported: No one told me that he had seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray the forenoon prayer except Umm Hani. She reported that on the day of the conquest of Mecca, he entered her house and prayed eight rak'ahs. I never saw him perform a prayer shorter than that, yet he completed the bowing and prostration. Ibn Bashshar's narration omits the word ‘ever.’

Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal reported: I was eager to find someone who could tell me whether the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed the voluntary forenoon prayer, but I found no one except Umm Hani, daughter of Abu Talib. She told me that on the day of the conquest, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came after the morning had advanced. A cloth was brought to screen him; he bathed, then stood and prayed eight rak'ahs. I do not know whether his standing, bowing, or prostration was longest; they were all about the same. She said, ‘I never saw him pray it before or after that.’ Al-Muradi's report from Yunus does not include the phrase ‘he informed me.’

Abu Murrah, the freedman of Umm Hani bint Abi Talib, reported that Umm Hani said: I went to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in the year of the conquest and found him bathing while his daughter Fatimah screened him with a cloth. I greeted him, and he asked, ‘Who is this?’ I said, ‘Umm Hani bint Abi Talib.’ He said, ‘Welcome, Umm Hani.’ When he finished bathing, he stood and prayed eight rak'ahs wrapped in a single garment. After he finished, I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, my maternal brother Ali ibn Abi Talib says he will kill so-and-so ibn Hubayrah, a man to whom I have granted protection.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘We grant protection to the one to whom you have granted protection, Umm Hani.’ Umm Hani said: This took place in the forenoon.

Abu Murrah, the freedman of Aqil, reported from Umm Hani that on the day of the conquest of Mecca, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed eight rak'ahs in her house, wearing a single garment with its two ends crossed over one another.
