Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi informed us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah; and Ibn Tawus, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “We are the last, yet the foremost. They were given the Scripture before us, and it was given to us after them. This is the day that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, prescribed for them, but they differed about it; Allah, Mighty and Majestic, guided us to it”—meaning Friday. “So people follow us in this: the Jews have it tomorrow, and the Christians the day after tomorrow.”

This was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, ‘Why do they not bathe?’”
