The Book of Jumu'ah (Friday Prayer)

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim informed us; he said: Jarir informed us, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When one of you has prayed the Friday prayer, let him pray four rak‘ahs afterward.”

Qutaybah narrated to us, from Malik, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not pray after the Friday prayer until he had left; then he would pray two rak‘ahs.

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim informed us; he said: ‘Abd al-Razzaq informed us; he said: Ma‘mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray two rak‘ahs after the Friday prayer in his house.

‘Abdah ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us, from Yazid—namely, Ibn Harun—who said: Shu‘bah informed us, from Ayyub, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, that he would pray two rak‘ahs after the Friday prayer, prolonging them, and say: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do this.”

Qutaybah narrated to us; he said: Bakr—meaning Ibn Mudar—narrated to us, from Ibn al-Had, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: I went to Mount Tur and found Ka‘b there. He and I spent a day together: I told him reports from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he told me from the Torah. I said to him: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was sent down to earth, on it his repentance was accepted, on it he died, and on it the Hour will begin. Every creature on earth, except the son of Adam, listens anxiously on Friday morning until the sun rises, fearing the Hour. There is an hour on it in which no believer happens to be praying and asks Allah for something without Him granting it to him.” Ka‘b said: “That day comes once every year.” I said: “Rather, it comes every Friday.” Ka‘b read the Torah, then said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has spoken the truth; it is every Friday.” I left and met Basrah ibn Abi Basrah al-Ghifari. He asked, “Where have you come from?” I said, “From Mount Tur.” He said, “If I had met you before you went there, you would not have gone.” I asked him why, and he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘No riding animals are saddled for a journey except to three mosques: the Sacred Mosque, my mosque, and the Mosque of Bayt al-Maqdis.’” Then I met ‘Abdullah ibn Salam and said: “If only you had seen me: I went to Mount Tur and met Ka‘b. We spent a day together: I told him reports from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he told me from the Torah. I said to him: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. I know which hour it is.” I said, “Brother, tell me.” He said: “It is the last hour of Friday, before the sun sets.” I said: “Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘No believer happens upon it while he is praying’—and that hour is not a time of prayer?” He said: “Did you not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘Whoever prays and then sits waiting for the next prayer remains in prayer until the prayer that follows comes to him’?” I said, “Yes.” He said: “Then that is how it is.”

Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn ‘Abdullah informed me; he said: Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us; he said: Ibrahim ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Rabah, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, who said: Sa‘id narrated to me, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “There is an hour on Friday that no Muslim servant happens upon while asking Allah for something without Him granting it to him.”

‘Amr ibn Zurarah informed us; he said: Isma‘il informed us, from Ayyub, from Muhammad, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is an hour on Friday in which no Muslim servant stands in prayer and asks Allah, Mighty and Majestic, for something without Him granting it to him.” We said: “He is making it seem small, deeming it insignificant.” Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: We know of no one who narrated this hadith through Rabah, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, except Ayyub ibn Suwayd, who narrated it from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Sa‘id and Abu Salamah. Ayyub ibn Suwayd is abandoned in hadith.
