The Book of Jumu'ah (Friday Prayer)

Muhammad ibn Salamah informed us; he said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Nashit, that he asked Ibn Shihab about bathing on Friday. He said: “It is Sunnah. Salim ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to me, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke about it from the pulpit.”

Qutaybah narrated to us; he said: al-Layth narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdullah, from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said while standing on the pulpit: “Whoever among you comes for Friday prayer, let him bathe.” Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: I know of no one who corroborated al-Layth on this chain except Ibn Jurayj. The companions of al-Zuhri say that it is from Salim ibn ‘Abdullah, from his father, instead of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Yazid informed us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn ‘Ajlan, from ‘Iyad ibn ‘Abdullah, who said: I heard Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri say: A man came on Friday while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was preaching, dressed shabbily. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, “Have you prayed?” He said, “No.” He said, “Pray two rak‘ahs.” He urged the people to give charity, and they cast down some garments. He gave the man two of them. When the next Friday came, the man arrived while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was preaching. He urged the people to give charity, and the man cast down one of his two garments. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This man came on Friday dressed shabbily, so I urged the people to give charity and they cast down garments; I arranged for him to receive two of them. Then he has come now, and when I urged the people to give charity, he cast one of them down.” He rebuked him and said, “Take your garment.”

Qutaybah narrated to us; he said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah, who said: While the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was preaching on Friday, a man came. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, “Have you prayed?” He said, “No.” He said, “Stand and pray.”

Muhammad ibn Mansur informed us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us; he said: Abu Musa—Isra’il ibn Musa—narrated to us; he said: I heard al-Hasan say: I heard Abu Bakrah say: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the pulpit with al-Hasan. He would turn toward the people at one moment and toward al-Hasan at another, saying: “This son of mine is a leader. Perhaps Allah will bring about reconciliation through him between two great groups of Muslims.”

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna informed us; he said: Harun ibn Isma‘il narrated to us; he said: ‘Ali—namely, Ibn al-Mubarak—narrated to us, from Yahya, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from the daughter of Harithah ibn al-Nu‘man, who said: I memorized “Qaf. By the glorious Quran” from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was on the pulpit on Friday.

Mahmud ibn Ghaylan informed us; he said: Waki‘ narrated to us; he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Husayn, that Bishr ibn Marwan raised his hands on the pulpit on Friday. ‘Umarah ibn Ru’aybah al-Thaqafi rebuked him and said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did no more than this,” gesturing with his index finger.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz informed us; he said: al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Waqid, from ‘Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was preaching when al-Hasan and al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) came wearing red shirts, stumbling in them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came down, stopped speaking, and carried them. Then he returned to the pulpit and said: “Allah has spoken the truth: ‘Your wealth and your children are only a trial.’ I saw these two stumbling in their shirts, and I could not restrain myself; I stopped speaking and carried them.”

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Ghazwan informed us; he said: al-Fadl ibn Musa informed us, from al-Husayn ibn Waqid, who said: Yahya ibn ‘Uqayl narrated to me; he said: I heard ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would remember Allah often, engage in little idle talk, make the prayer long and the sermon short, and did not disdain walking with a widow or a poor person to see to their need.

‘Ali ibn Hujr informed us; he said: Sharik narrated to us, from Simak, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: I sat with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I never saw him deliver a sermon except standing. Then he would sit, then stand and deliver the second sermon.

Isma‘il ibn Mas‘ud informed us; he said: Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us; he said: ‘Ubaydullah narrated to us, from Nafi‘, from ‘Abdullah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would deliver the two sermons standing and separate them by sitting.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Bazi‘ informed us; he said: Yazid—meaning Ibn Zuray‘—narrated to us; he said: Isra’il narrated to us; he said: Simak narrated to us, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) deliver the Friday sermon standing. Then he sat for a brief sitting without speaking, then stood and delivered another sermon. Whoever tells you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon seated has lied.

‘Amr ibn ‘Ali narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Rahman, who said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Simak, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would deliver the sermon standing, then sit, then stand and recite verses and remember Allah, Mighty and Majestic. His sermon was moderate, and his prayer was moderate.

Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Maymun informed me; he said: al-Firyabi narrated to us; he said: Jarir ibn Hazim narrated to us, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come down from the pulpit, and a man would approach him and speak to him. The Prophet would stay with him until he had seen to his need, then go forward to his prayer place and pray.

‘Ali ibn Hujr informed us; he said: Sharik narrated to us, from Zubayd, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: ‘Umar said: “The Friday prayer is two rak‘ahs; the Eid al-Fitr prayer is two rak‘ahs; the Eid al-Adha prayer is two rak‘ahs; and the travel prayer is two rak‘ahs—complete, not shortened—on the tongue of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).” Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla did not hear from ‘Umar.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la al-San‘ani informed us; he said: Khalid ibn al-Harith narrated to us; he said: Shu‘bah narrated to us; he said: Mukhawwal informed me; he said: I heard Muslim al-Batin narrate from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, that on Fridays the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite in the dawn prayer “Alif Lam Mim. The sending down of the Book…” [Surah al-Sajdah] and “Has there come upon man…” [Surah al-Insan]; and in the Friday prayer, Surah al-Jumu‘ah and al-Munafiqun.

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la informed us; he said: Khalid narrated to us, from Shu‘bah, who said: Ma‘bad ibn Khalid informed me, from Zayd ibn ‘Uqbah, from Samurah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite in the Friday prayer: “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High” [Surah al-A‘la] and “Has the account of the Overwhelming come to you?” [Surah al-Ghashiyah].

Qutaybah narrated to us, from Malik, from Damrah ibn Sa‘id, from ‘Ubaydullah ibn ‘Abdullah, that al-Dahhak ibn Qays asked al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir, “What would the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recite on Friday immediately after Surah al-Jumu‘ah?” He said: He would recite “Has the account of the Overwhelming come to you?” [Surah al-Ghashiyah].

Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la informed us; he said: Khalid narrated to us, from Shu‘bah, that Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muntashir informed him; he said: I heard my father relate from Habib ibn Salim, from al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir, who said: On Friday, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High” [Surah al-A‘la] and “Has the account of the Overwhelming come to you?” [Surah al-Ghashiyah]. Sometimes Eid and Friday would coincide, and he would recite both surahs in both prayers.

Qutaybah and Muhammad ibn Mansur narrated to us—the wording is his—from Sufyan, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: “Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Friday prayer has caught it.”
