General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab)

Salim ibn Ubayd al-Ashjai reported the same hadith from the Prophet through this chain.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet said: When one of you sneezes, let him say, Praise be to Allah in every circumstance. His brother or companion should say, May Allah have mercy on you; and he should reply, May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.

Abu Hurayrah said: Invoke mercy for your brother when he sneezes, up to three times. If he sneezes more than that, he has a cold.

Abu Hurayrah reported this hadith with its meaning, though the transmitter said, I only know that he traced it back to the Prophet. Abu Dawud said: Abu Nuaim transmitted it from Musa ibn Qays, from Muhammad ibn Ajlan, from Said, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet.

Ubayd ibn Rifaa al-Zuraqi reported that the Prophet said: Invoke Allahs mercy for the sneezer up to three times. After that, if you wish, continue invoking mercy for him; if you wish, stop.

Salamah ibn al-Akwa reported that a man sneezed in the presence of the Prophet, who said to him, May Allah have mercy on you. When the man sneezed again, the Prophet said, The man has a cold.

Abu Burdah reported that the Jews would deliberately sneeze in the presence of the Prophet, hoping he would say, May Allah have mercy on you. Instead he would say, May Allah guide you and set your affairs right.

Anas said: Two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet. He invoked mercy for one and not the other. He was asked, Messenger of Allah, two men sneezed, yet you invoked mercy for one and left the other. Ahmad wording says, you invoked mercy for one of them. He replied, This one praised Allah, while that one did not.

Yaish ibn Tikhfah al-Ghifari said: My father was among the people of the Suffah. The Messenger of Allah said, Let us go to Aisha house. We went, and he said, Aisha, give us food. She brought hashishah, and we ate. He asked again, and she brought a dish of haysah, about the size of a partridge, and we ate. He asked us for a drink, and she brought a large milk vessel, from which we drank. He asked again, and she brought a small cup, from which we drank. He said, If you wish, you may spend the night here, or you may go to the mosque. Near dawn, while I was lying on my stomach in the mosque, a man nudged me with his foot and said, This is a way of lying that Allah hates. I looked and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah.

Ali ibn Shayban reported that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever spends the night on a roof without a protective wall has forfeited the guarantee of protection.

Muadh ibn Jabal reported that the Prophet said: Any Muslim who goes to sleep remembering Allah and in a state of purity, then wakes suddenly during the night and asks Allah for good in this world and the Hereafter, will be granted it. Thabit al-Bunani said that Abu Zabyah visited them and narrated this report from Muadh from the Prophet. Thabit added: So-and-so said, I tried hard to say these words when I awoke, but could not manage it.

Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah got up during the night, relieved himself, washed his face and hands, and then slept. Abu Dawud explained that he had urinated.

Musaddad narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Khalid al-Hadhdha, from Abu Qilabah, from some relatives of Umm Salamah, who said: The bed of the Prophet ﷺ was about the size of what a person is placed on in his grave, and the mosque was beside its head.

Musa ibn Ismail narrated to us: Aban narrated to us: Asim narrated to us, from Mab ad ibn Khalid, from Sawwa, from Hafsah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to sleep, he placed his right hand beneath his cheek and said three times: O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day You resurrect Your servants.

Musaddad narrated to us: al-Mutamir narrated to us, who said: I heard Mansur narrate from Sad ibn Ubaydah, who said: Al-Bara ibn Azib told me: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: When you go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie on your right side and say: O Allah, I submit myself to You, entrust my affairs to You, and turn my back to You, in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge or escape from You except with You. I believe in Your Book that You sent down and in Your Prophet whom You sent. If you die, you will die upon the natural disposition, so make these your last words. Al-Bara said: I tried to memorize them and said: and in Your Messenger whom You sent. He said: No, say: and in Your Prophet whom You sent.

Musaddad narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from Fitr ibn Khalifah, who said: I heard Sad ibn Ubaydah say: I heard al-Bara ibn Azib say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: When you go to your bed in a state of purity, rest your head on your right side. He then mentioned a report with similar meaning.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Malik al-Ghazzal narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Amash and Mansur, from Sad ibn Ubaydah, from al-Bara ibn Azib, from the Prophet ﷺ, with this report. Sufyan said that one of the two narrators said: When you come to your bed in a state of purity; and the other said: Perform ablution as you do for prayer. He related the meaning of al-Mutamir’s report.

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Waki narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Rib i, from Hudhayfah, who said: When the Prophet ﷺ went to sleep, he would say: O Allah, in Your name I live and die. When he woke, he would say: Praise belongs to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us: Zuhayr narrated to us: Ubaydullah ibn Umar narrated to us, from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When one of you goes to bed, let him shake out his bedding with the inner edge of his waist wrapper, for he does not know what may have come onto it after him. Then let him lie on his right side and say: In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it; and if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.

Musa ibn Ismail narrated to us: Wuhayb narrated to us. (A second chain:) Wahb ibn Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Khalid, with a similar report, from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who used to say when he went to bed: O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of everything, Splitter of the seed and the pit, Sender down of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every evil-doer whose forelock You hold. You are the First, and nothing is before You; You are the Last, and nothing is after You; You are the Manifest, and nothing is above You; You are the Hidden, and nothing is beneath You. Wahb adds in his report: Settle my debt and make me free of poverty.
