Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions

ʿAbdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Malik ibn Anas informed us, from Nafiʿ, from ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that some Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him that a man and a woman among them had committed adultery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, “What does the Torah say about stoning?” They replied, “We expose them and flog them.” ʿAbdullah ibn Salam said, “You are lying; it contains the ruling of stoning.” They brought the Torah and opened it. One of them placed his hand over the verse about stoning and read what came before and after it. ʿAbdullah ibn Salam said to him, “Lift your hand.” He lifted it, and there was the verse about stoning. They said, “You have spoken the truth, Muhammad; the Torah contains the verse about stoning.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that the two be stoned. ʿAbdullah said: I saw the man leaning over the woman to shield her from the stones.

Sadaqa ibn al-Fadl narrated to us: Ibn ʿUyayna informed us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, from Abu Maʿmar, from ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the moon split in two. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Bear witness.”

ʿAbdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to me: Yunus narrated to us: Shayban narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas ibn Malik. Khalifa also said to me: Yazid ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us: Saʿid narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), who told them that the people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to show them a sign, so he showed them the splitting of the moon.

Khalaf ibn Khalid al-Qurashi narrated to me: Bakr ibn Mudar narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Rabiʿa, from ʿIrak ibn Malik, from ʿUbaydullah ibn ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud, from Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the moon split during the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to me: Muʿadh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, from Qatada: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us that two men from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ left his presence on a dark night, with something like two lamps shining before them. When they parted ways, one light accompanied each man until he reached his home.

ʿAbdullah ibn Abi al-Aswad narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from Ismaʿil: Qays narrated to us: I heard al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “A group of my community will continue to prevail until Allah’s command comes to them, while they are still prevailing.”

Al-Humaydi narrated to us: Al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Ibn Jabir narrated to me: ʿUmayr ibn Hani narrated to me that he heard Muʿawiya say: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “A group of my community will continue to uphold Allah’s command. Those who abandon them and those who oppose them will not harm them, until Allah’s command comes to them while they remain in that state.” ʿUmayr said: Malik ibn Yukhāmir said, “Muʿadh said: They are in Syria.” Muʿawiya said, “This is Malik, who claims that he heard Muʿadh say, ‘They are in Syria.’”

ʿAli ibn ʿAbdullah narrated to us: Sufyan informed us: Shabib ibn Gharqada said: I heard people of the clan recounting from ʿUrwa that the Prophet ﷺ gave him a dinar to buy a sheep. He bought two sheep with it, sold one for a dinar, and returned with a dinar and a sheep. The Prophet ﷺ prayed that his transactions be blessed, and thereafter, even if he bought dust, he would profit from it. Sufyan said: Al-Hasan ibn ʿUmara brought us this report from him, saying that Shabib heard it from ʿUrwa. I went to Shabib, who said, “I did not hear it from ʿUrwa; I heard the people of the clan recounting it from him.” However, I heard him say, “I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, ‘Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection.’” He said, “I saw seventy horses in his house.” Sufyan said: He bought him a sheep as if it were for sacrifice.

Musaddad narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from ʿUbaydullah, who said: Nafiʿ informed me, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Goodness will remain in the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection.”

Qays ibn Hafs narrated to us: Khalid ibn al-Harith narrated to us: Shuʿba narrated to us, from Abu al-Tayyah, who said: I heard Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses.”

ʿAbdullah ibn Maslama narrated to us, from Malik, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Abu Salih al-Samman, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, “Horses are for three kinds of people: for one man they bring reward, for another they are a means of protection, and for another they are a burden of sin. The one who is rewarded is a man who tethers them for the cause of Allah and lets them graze freely in a meadow or garden. Whatever they eat within the length of their tether is counted as good deeds for him. If they break loose and run up one or two hills, their droppings are counted as good deeds for him. If they pass by a river and drink from it, even though he did not intend to water them, that is counted as good deeds for him. Another man keeps them to earn a living, protect himself, and remain self-sufficient, while not forgetting Allah’s due regarding their necks and backs; they are a protection for him. A third man keeps them out of pride, ostentation, and hostility toward the people of Islam; they are a burden of sin for him.”

The Prophet ﷺ was asked about donkeys and said, “Nothing has been revealed to me concerning them except this comprehensive, unique verse: ‘Whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.’” [Qur’an 99:7–8]

ʿAli ibn ʿAbdullah narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us: Ayyub narrated to us, from Muhammad, who said: I heard Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived at Khaybar early in the morning while its people had gone out with their shovels. When they saw him, they cried, “Muhammad and the army!” and hurried back toward the fortress. The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, “Allah is the Greatest! Khaybar is ruined. When we descend upon the territory of a people, evil is the morning of those who were warned.”

Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir narrated to me: Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Dhiʾb, from al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I said, “Messenger of Allah, I hear many things from you, but I forget them.” He said, “Spread out your cloak.” I spread it out, and he scooped into it with his hand. Then he said, “Gather it up.” I gathered it up, and after that I never forgot a report.
