It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I have been commanded to fight the people until they say, “There is no god but Allah.” When they say it, their lives and property are protected from me, except when a rightful claim applies; and their reckoning is with Allah, the Almighty.’

‘Amr ibn Aws narrated that his father, Aws, told him: ‘We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ as he recounted matters to us and admonished us, when a man came and spoke privately to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Take him away and kill him.” As the man turned to leave, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him back and asked, “Do you testify that there is no god but Allah?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “Then go and release him. I have only been commanded to fight the people until they say, ‘There is no god but Allah.’ When they do that, their lives and property are forbidden to me.”’

It was narrated from al-Sumayt ibn al-Sumayr that ‘Imran ibn al-Husayn said: ‘Nafi‘ ibn al-Azraq and his companions came and said, “You are doomed, ‘Imran.” I said, “I am not doomed.” They said, “Indeed, you are.” I asked, “What has doomed me?” They said, “Allah says, ‘Fight them until there is no persecution and the religion belongs wholly to Allah.’” I replied, “We fought them until we drove them away, and the religion belonged wholly to Allah. If you wish, I will tell you a report I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” They asked, “Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” I said, “Yes. I was present when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an army of Muslims against the polytheists. When they met, they fought fiercely and drove them back. A man from among my people attacked a polytheist with a spear. When he had closed in on him, the man said, ‘I testify that there is no god but Allah; I am a Muslim.’ But he stabbed and killed him. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I am doomed.’ The Prophet asked him once or twice, ‘What have you done?’ He told him what had happened, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Why did you not open his belly and see what was in his heart?’ He said, ‘Messenger of Allah, if I had opened his belly, would I have known what was in his heart?’ He replied, ‘You neither accepted what he said nor could you know what was in his heart.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then fell silent about him. Before long, the man died, and we buried him. The next morning he was lying on the ground. We said, “Perhaps an enemy had dug him up,” so we buried him again and ordered our young men to guard him. The next morning he was lying on the ground again. We said, “Perhaps the young men fell asleep,” so we buried him and guarded him ourselves. The next morning he was lying on the ground again, so we cast him into one of those mountain passes.’

It was narrated from al-Sumayt, from ‘Imran ibn al-Husayn, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on an expedition. A Muslim man attacked a polytheist,’ and he related the report, adding: ‘The earth cast him out. The Prophet ﷺ was told about it and said, “The earth would accept someone worse than him, but Allah wanted to show you the sanctity of the declaration, ‘There is no god but Allah.’”’

It was narrated from Abu Sa‘id that during the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Indeed, the most inviolable of days is this day of yours; the most inviolable of months is this month of yours; and the most inviolable of lands is this land of yours. Your lives and property are inviolable among you, like the inviolability of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Have I conveyed the message?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘O Allah, bear witness.’

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar that he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulating the Ka‘bah and saying: ‘How good you are, and how sweet your fragrance; how great you are, and how great your sanctity! By the One in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, the sanctity of a believer is greater before Allah than yours: his property and blood, and that we think nothing but good of him.’
