The Book of Prayer - Travellers

Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us. He said: I recited to Malik, from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayra, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade prayer after the 'Asr prayer until the sun sets, and prayer after the dawn prayer until the sun rises.

Harmala ibn Yahya narrated to me; Ibn Wahb informed us; Yunus informed me that Ibn Shihab informed him. He said: 'Ata ibn Yazid al-Laythi informed me that he heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There is no prayer after the 'Asr prayer until the sun sets, and no prayer after the dawn prayer until the sun rises.

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba narrated to us; Waki' narrated to us. Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us; my father and Ibn Bishr narrated to us. They all said: Hisham narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn 'Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the sun's edge first appears, delay the prayer until it is fully visible; and when the sun's edge disappears, delay the prayer until it has completely set.

Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us; 'Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Musa ibn 'Ulayy, from his father, who said: I heard 'Uqba ibn 'Amir al-Juhani say: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade us to pray or bury our dead at three times: when the sun rises until it has climbed higher; when midday is at its height until the sun declines; and when the sun approaches setting until it sets.

Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Ma'qari narrated to me; al-Nadr ibn Muhammad narrated to us; 'Ikrima ibn 'Ammar narrated to us; Shaddad ibn 'Abd Allah Abu 'Ammar and Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us, from Abu Umama. 'Ikrima said: Shaddad met Abu Umama and Wathila, accompanied Anas to Syria, and spoke highly of his virtue and goodness. From Abu Umama, who said: 'Amr ibn 'Abasa al-Sulami said:

In the days of ignorance, I used to think that people were astray and followed nothing true, for they worshipped idols. I heard of a man in Mecca who was conveying reports, so I mounted my riding animal and went to him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was then in hiding, with his people treating him harshly. I made my way in carefully until I reached him in Mecca and asked: What are you? He said: I am a Prophet. I asked: What is a prophet? He said: Allah has sent me. I asked: With what has He sent you? He said: He sent me to maintain ties of kinship, break the idols, and worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him. I asked: Who is with you in this? He said: A free man and a slave. Abu Bakr and Bilal were with him then among those who had believed. I said: I will follow you. He said: You cannot do that today. Do you not see my condition and the people's condition? Return to your family, and when you hear that I have prevailed, come to me.

I returned to my family. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Medina while I was with my family, and I kept seeking news and asking people about him. When people from Yathrib, the people of Medina, came to me, I asked: What has happened with the man who came to Medina? They said: People are hastening to him, and his people had wanted to kill him but could not. I came to Medina and went in to see him. I said: Messenger of Allah, do you recognize me? He said: Yes, you are the one who met me in Mecca. I said: That is right. Prophet of Allah, tell me what Allah has taught you that I do not know. Tell me about prayer. He said: Pray the dawn prayer, then refrain from praying until the sun has risen and climbed higher, for when it rises it rises between the two horns of Satan, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended, until the shadow stands upright against a spear. Then refrain from prayer, for at that time Hell is stoked. When the shadow begins to lengthen, pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended, until you pray the 'Asr prayer. Then refrain from prayer until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of Satan, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it.

I said: Prophet of Allah, tell me about ablution. He said: Whenever one of you brings water for ablution, rinses his mouth, draws water into his nose, and expels it, the sins of his face, mouth, and nostrils fall away. When he washes his face as Allah commanded him, the sins of his face fall away with the water from the edges of his beard. When he washes his hands up to the elbows, the sins of his hands fall away with the water from his fingertips. When he wipes his head, the sins of his head fall away with the water from the ends of his hair. When he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall away with the water from his toes. If he then stands and prays, praises Allah, extols Him and glorifies Him as He deserves, and devotes his heart to Allah, he leaves his sins behind as he was on the day his mother gave birth to him.' Amr ibn 'Abasa related this hadith to Abu Umama, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Abu Umama said to him: Amr ibn 'Abasa, consider what you are saying: such a reward is granted to a man in a single sitting. Amr said: Abu Umama, I have grown old, my bones have weakened, and my end is near. I have no need to lie about Allah or His Messenger. If I had heard this from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) only once, twice, or three times—he counted up to seven—I would never have related it; but I heard it more often than that.
