Chapter 54
فَضْلِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ

It was narrated that Umm Hani’ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘There is no deed that can surpass “There is no god but Allah,” and it leaves no sin.’

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever says one hundred times in a day, “There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise, and He has power over all things,” will have the reward of freeing ten slaves; one hundred good deeds will be recorded for him, and one hundred bad deeds erased. It will be a protection for him from Satan throughout that day until evening, and no one will bring anything better than what he has brought, except one who says it more times.’

It was narrated from Abu Sa‘id that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Whoever says after the dawn prayer, “There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise; all good is in His hand, and He has power over all things,” will be like one who has freed a slave from among the descendants of Isma‘il.’

It was narrated that Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘The best remembrance is “There is no god but Allah,” and the best supplication is “All praise is for Allah.”’

It was narrated that Qudamah ibn Ibrahim al-Jumahi said: I used to visit ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab when I was a boy, wearing two saffron-dyed garments. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar told us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had related: ‘A servant of Allah said, “My Lord, to You belongs praise as befits the majesty of Your Face and the greatness of Your sovereignty.” The two angels found this difficult to record and did not know how to write it. They ascended to heaven and said, “Our Lord, Your servant has said something, and we do not know how to write it.” Allah, Mighty and Sublime, though knowing best what His servant had said, asked, “What did My servant say?” They said, “Our Lord, he said, ‘My Lord, to You belongs praise as befits the majesty of Your Face and the greatness of Your sovereignty.’” Allah, Mighty and Sublime, said to them, “Write it as My servant said it, until he meets Me, and I will reward him for it.”’

It was narrated from ‘Abd al-Jabbar ibn Wa’il, from his father, who said: I prayed with the Prophet ﷺ, and a man said, ‘Praise belongs to Allah—abundant, pure, blessed praise.’ When the Prophet ﷺ had finished praying, he asked, ‘Who said that?’ The man replied, ‘I did; I intended nothing but good.’ He said, ‘The gates of heaven were opened for it, and nothing held it back before it reached the Throne.’

Chapter 56

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Two phrases are light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale, and beloved to the Most Merciful: “Glory and praise be to Allah; glory be to Allah, the Almighty.”’

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by him while he was planting and asked, ‘Abu Hurairah, what are you planting?’ He replied, ‘A plant for myself.’ He said, ‘Shall I show you something better to plant than this?’ He said, ‘Certainly, Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Say: “Glory be to Allah, praise belongs to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.” For each of these, a tree will be planted for you in Paradise.’

It was narrated that Juwayriyah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by her after the dawn prayer—or after he had prayed it—while she was remembering Allah. He returned when the day had grown bright—or, one narrator said, reached midday—and she was still as she had been. He said, ‘Since I left you, I have said four phrases three times. They are greater and weightier—or, another narrator said, heavier in the Scale—than what you have said: “Glory be to Allah as numerous as His creation; glory be to Allah to the measure of His good pleasure; glory be to Allah as weighty as His Throne; glory be to Allah, as abundant as the ink of His words.”’

It was narrated from al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Among the words by which you proclaim Allah’s majesty are glorifying Him, declaring His oneness, and praising Him. They circle around the Throne, humming like bees and mentioning the one who said them. Would any of you not like to have—or always have—something that keeps mentioning him?’

It was narrated that Umm Hani’ said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, guide me to a deed, for I have grown old, weak, and heavy.’ He said, ‘Proclaim Allah’s greatness one hundred times, praise Allah one hundred times, and glorify Allah one hundred times. This is better than one hundred bridled and saddled horses in the cause of Allah, better than one hundred sacrificial camels, and better than freeing one hundred slaves.’

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: We used to count that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say one hundred times in a gathering: ‘My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. You are indeed the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.’
