Muhammad ibn Rumh al-Misri informed us; al-Layth ibn Sa'd informed us, from Ibn Shihab, from 'Urwah, from 'Aishah: Quraysh were troubled by the case of the Makhzumi woman who had stolen. They said: Who will speak to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on her behalf? They said: Who would dare to do so except Usamah ibn Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah? Usamah spoke to him, and the Messenger of Allah said: Do you intercede regarding one of Allah's prescribed limits? Then he stood and delivered a sermon: People, those before you were destroyed because when a noble person among them stole, they left him alone, but when a weak person among them stole, they carried out the prescribed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatimah daughter of Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand. Muhammad ibn Rumh said: I heard al-Layth ibn Sa'd say: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has protected her from stealing; Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has protected her from stealing; and every Muslim should say this.

She was a woman from Quraysh. We came to the Prophet to speak with him and said: We will ransom her for forty uqiyyahs. The Messenger of Allah said: Her being purified is better for her. When we heard the gentleness in the Messenger of Allah's words, we went to Usamah and said: Speak to the Messenger of Allah. When the Messenger of Allah saw that, he stood and delivered a sermon: How often you plead with me about one of the limits of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, which has befallen one of Allah's servant women! By the One in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, if Fatimah daughter of the Messenger of Allah were to do what this woman did, Muhammad would cut off her hand.

His opponent, who was more knowledgeable than he, said: Judge between us according to the Book of Allah, and allow me to speak. He said: Speak. He said: My son was a hired worker for this man, and he committed adultery with his wife. I ransomed him from him for one hundred sheep and a servant. I asked a man of knowledge, and was told that my son must receive one hundred lashes and be exiled for a year, while this man's wife must be stoned. The Messenger of Allah said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, I will surely judge between you according to the Book of Allah. The one hundred sheep and the servant are to be returned to you; your son is to receive one hundred lashes and a year's exile. Go tomorrow, Unays, to this man's wife; if she confesses, stone her.
