Game (Kitab Al-Said)

Al-Hasan ibn 'Ali narrated to us: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: ‘Whoever keeps a dog—except a dog for livestock, hunting, or crops—will have one qirat deducted from his reward each day.’

Musaddad narrated to us: Yazid narrated to us: Yunus narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from 'Abd Allah ibn Mughaffal, who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Were dogs not a community among the communities, I would have ordered them all to be killed. So kill the pitch-black ones among them.’

Yahya ibn Khalaf narrated to us: Abu 'Asim narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu al-Zubayr informed me, from Jabir, who said: ‘The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) ordered that dogs be killed. We even killed a dog when a woman came from the desert—meaning, bringing a dog. Then he forbade us to kill them and said: “Keep to the black ones.”’

Muhammad ibn 'Isa narrated to us: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from Hammam, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, who said: ‘I asked the Prophet (ﷺ): “I send out trained dogs, and they catch game for me. May I eat it?” He replied: “When you send out your trained dogs and mention Allah's name, eat what they catch for you.” I asked: “Even if they kill it?” He replied: “Even if they kill it, provided no dog other than yours joins them.” I asked: “I shoot with a mi'rad and it strikes the game; may I eat it?” He replied: “When you shoot with a mi'rad and mention Allah's name, and it strikes and pierces the game, eat it. But if it strikes with its broad side, do not eat it.”’

Hannad ibn al-Sari narrated to us: Ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Bayan, from 'Amir, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, who said: ‘I asked the Prophet (ﷺ): “We hunt with these dogs.” He replied: “When you send out your trained dogs and mention Allah's name over them, eat what they catch for you, even if they kill it—unless the dog eats from it. If the dog eats from it, do not eat it, for I fear it may have caught it for itself.”’

Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from 'Asim al-Ahwal, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘If you shoot your arrow after mentioning Allah's name, then find the game the next day, and it has not been in water and bears no mark other than your arrow, eat it. But if a dog other than yours mingles with your dogs, do not eat it, for you cannot know whether the other dog killed it.’

Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Faris narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us: Yahya ibn Zakariyya ibn Abi Za'idah narrated to us: 'Asim al-Ahwal informed me, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘If the game you shot falls into water, drowns, and dies, do not eat it.’

Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us: Mujalid narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Whatever you have trained—a dog or a hawk—and then send out after mentioning Allah's name, eat what it catches for you.’ I asked: ‘Even if it kills the game?’ He replied: ‘If it kills it and eats none of it, then it has caught it for you.’ Abu Dawud said: ‘If a hawk eats from it, there is no harm. If a dog eats from it, that is disliked. If it drinks the blood, there is no harm.’

Muhammad ibn 'Isa narrated to us: Hushaym narrated to us: Dawud ibn 'Amr narrated to us, from Busr ibn 'Ubayd Allah, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani, who said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said concerning game hunted by a dog: ‘When you send out your dog and mention Allah's name, eat it, even if it eats from it; and eat whatever your hands bring back to you.’

Al-Husayn ibn Mu'adh ibn Khulayf narrated to us: 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us: Dawud narrated to us, from 'Amir, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, who said: ‘Messenger of Allah, one of us shoots at game and tracks it for two or three days; then he finds it dead with his arrow in it. May he eat it?’ He replied: ‘Yes, if he wishes.’ Or he said: ‘He may eat it if he wishes.’

Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Safar, from al-Sha'bi, who said that 'Adi ibn Hatim said: ‘I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about the mi'rad. He replied: “If it strikes with its point, eat; if it strikes with its broad side, do not eat, for that is a blow-killed animal.” I said: “Shall I send out my dog?” He replied: “If you mention Allah's name, eat; otherwise, do not eat. If it eats from the game, do not eat, for it caught it for itself.” I said: “I send out my dog and find another dog with it.” He replied: “Do not eat, because you mentioned Allah's name over your dog.”’

Hannad ibn al-Sari narrated to us, from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Haywah ibn Shurayh, who said: I heard Rabi'ah ibn Yazid al-Dimashqi say: Abu Idris al-Khawlani—'A'id Allah—informed me: I heard Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani say: ‘I said: “Messenger of Allah, I hunt with my trained dog and with my untrained dog.” He replied: “Whatever you hunt with your trained dog, mention Allah's name and eat it. Whatever you hunt with your untrained dog, if you catch it while it can still be properly slaughtered, then eat it.”’

Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Harb narrated to us. [Another chain:] Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa narrated to us: Baqiyyah narrated to us, from al-Zubaydi: Yunus ibn Sayf narrated to us: Abu Idris al-Khawlani narrated to us: Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani narrated to me, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: “Abu Tha'labah, eat whatever your bow and your dog bring back to you.”’ Ibn Harb's version adds: ‘the trained [dog] and your hand; eat it whether ritually slaughtered or not.’

Muhammad ibn al-Minhal al-Darir narrated to us: Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us: Habib al-Mu'allim narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that a Bedouin called Abu Tha'labah said: ‘Messenger of Allah, I have trained hunting dogs; advise me about the game they catch.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: ‘If you have trained hunting dogs, eat what they catch for you.’ He asked: ‘Whether it has been ritually slaughtered or not?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ He asked: ‘Even if the dog has eaten from it?’ He replied: ‘Even if it has eaten from it.’ The man said: ‘Messenger of Allah, advise me about my bow.’ He replied: ‘Eat what your bow brings back to you.’ He asked: ‘Whether it has been ritually slaughtered or not?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ He asked: ‘Even if it disappears from my sight?’ He replied: ‘Even if it disappears from your sight, provided it has not begun to smell or you do not find on it a mark other than your arrow.’ He asked: ‘Advise me about the vessels of the Magians if we are compelled to use them.’ He replied: ‘Wash them and eat from them.’’

Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from 'Ata ibn Yasar, from Abu Waqid, who said that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Whatever is cut from a livestock animal while it is alive is carrion.’

Musaddad narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from Sufyan, who said: Abu Musa narrated to me, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, from Ibn 'Abbas, from the Prophet (ﷺ). On one occasion Sufyan said: ‘I know it only as a report from the Prophet (ﷺ).’ He said: ‘Whoever lives in the desert becomes rough; whoever pursues hunting becomes heedless; and whoever goes to the ruler is put to trial.’

Muhammad ibn 'Isa narrated to us: Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd narrated to us: al-Hasan ibn al-Hakam al-Nakha'i narrated to us, from 'Adi ibn Thabit, from an unnamed man of the Ansar, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (ﷺ), with a report like Musaddad's. It says: ‘Whoever stays close to the ruler is put to trial.’ It adds: ‘Whenever a servant draws nearer to the ruler, he grows farther from Allah.’

Yahya ibn Ma'in narrated to us: Hammad ibn Khalid al-Khayyat narrated to us, from Mu'awiyah ibn Salih, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father, from Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani, from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: ‘If you shoot at game and come upon it after three nights with your arrow still in it, eat it, so long as it has not begun to smell.’
