The Rites of Hajj (Kitab Al-Manasik Wa'l-Hajj)

Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us; Yahya narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir ibn Abd Allah say: During the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet (ﷺ) circumambulated the House on his riding animal and went between al-Safa and al-Marwah on it, so that people could see him, observe him, and ask him questions, for the people had crowded around him.

Musaddad narrated to us; Khalid ibn Abd Allah narrated to us; Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to us, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Mecca while unwell and circumambulated on his riding animal. Whenever he came to the Corner, he touched it with a hooked staff. When he had finished circumambulating, he made the animal kneel and prayed two rak‘ahs.

Al-Qa‘nabi narrated to us, from Malik, from Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, from Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: I complained to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that I was unwell. He said: Circumambulate behind the people while riding. She said: I did so while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was praying beside the House and reciting: ‘By the Mount and a Book inscribed.’

Muhammad ibn Kathir informed us; Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ibn Ya‘la, from Ya‘la, who said: The Prophet (ﷺ) circumambulated with his upper garment draped diagonally, wearing a green mantle.

Abu Salamah Musa narrated to us; Hammad narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Uthman ibn Khuthaym, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his Companions performed ‘umrah from al-Ji‘ranah. They walked briskly around the House and placed their upper garments beneath their armpits, draping them over their left shoulders.

Abu Salamah Musa ibn Ismail narrated to us; Hammad narrated to us; Abu Asim al-Ghanawi narrated to us, from Abu al-Tufayl, who said: I asked Ibn Abbas: Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed ramal around the House and that this is Sunnah. He said: They are right and wrong. I asked: How were they right, and how wrong? He said: They are right that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed ramal, but wrong that it is Sunnah. At al-Hudaybiyyah, Quraysh said: Leave Muhammad and his Companions alone until they die like animals from nasal grubs. When they made a treaty allowing them to come the following year and stay in Mecca for three days, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came, while the polytheists were at Qu‘ayqi‘an, and said to his Companions: Perform ramal around the House for three circuits. It is not Sunnah. I asked: Your people also claim that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) rode while going between al-Safa and al-Marwah and that this is Sunnah. He said: They are right and wrong. They are right that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a riding animal, but wrong that it is Sunnah. People were not kept away from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), nor made to move aside, so he rode in order that they could hear his words and see him, and so their hands could not reach him.

Musaddad narrated to us; Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, who reported from Ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Mecca after the fever of Yathrib had weakened them. The polytheists said: A people weakened by fever and afflicted by hardship are coming to you. Allah, Glorified is He, informed His Prophet (ﷺ) of what they had said, so he ordered his Companions to perform ramal for the first three circuits and walk between the two corners. When the polytheists saw them performing ramal, they said: These are the people you said the fever had weakened; they are stronger than us. Ibn Abbas said: He ordered them to perform ramal for only three circuits out of compassion for them.

Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us; Abd al-Malik ibn Amr narrated to us; Hisham ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, who said: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say: Why perform ramal and uncover the shoulders today, when Allah has strengthened Islam and removed disbelief and its people? Even so, we will not abandon anything we used to do in the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

Musaddad narrated to us; Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us; Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to us, from al-Qasim, from Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Circumambulation around the House, going between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and stoning the pillars were prescribed to establish the remembrance of Allah.

Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Anbari narrated to us; Yahya ibn Sulaym narrated to us, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet (ﷺ) wore his upper garment diagonally, touched the Corner, and said Allahu akbar; then he performed ramal for three circuits. When they reached the Yemeni Corner and were out of Quraysh’s sight, they walked normally; then, when they came back into view, they performed ramal. Quraysh said: They look like gazelles. Ibn Abbas said: This thus became Sunnah.

Musa ibn Ismail narrated to us; Hammad narrated to us; Abd Allah ibn Uthman ibn Khuthaym informed us, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his Companions performed ‘umrah from al-Ji‘ranah. They performed ramal around the House for three circuits and walked for four.

Abu Kamil narrated to us; Sulaym ibn Akhdar narrated to us; Ubayd Allah narrated to us, from Nafi‘, that Ibn Umar performed ramal from the Stone to the Stone and mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had done so.

Musaddad narrated to us; Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Ubayd, from his father, from Abd Allah ibn al-Sa’ib, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say between the two corners: ‘Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’

Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us; Ya‘qub narrated to us, from Musa ibn Uqbah, from Nafi‘, from Ibn Umar, that whenever the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed circumambulation for Hajj or ‘umrah upon first arriving, he walked briskly for three circuits and walked for four, then prayed two rak‘ahs.

Ibn al-Sarh and al-Fadl ibn Ya‘qub narrated to us—this is his wording; they said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Abd Allah ibn Babah, from Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, tracing it to the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: Do not prevent anyone from circumambulating this House and praying at whatever hour of the night or day he wishes. Al-Fadl said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: O Banu Abd Manaf, do not prevent anyone.

Ibn Hanbal narrated to us; Yahya narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abu al-Zubayr informed me: I heard Jabir ibn Abd Allah say: Neither the Prophet (ﷺ) nor his Companions went between al-Safa and al-Marwah more than once, namely, during his first circumambulation.

Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us; Malik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwah, from Aishah, that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who were with him did not circumambulate until they had stoned the Jamarah.

Al-Rabi ibn Sulayman al-Mu’adhdhin informed me; al-Shafi‘i narrated to me, from Ibn Uyaynah, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Ata, from Aishah, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to her: Your circumambulation of the House and your going between al-Safa and al-Marwah suffice for your Hajj and your ‘umrah. Al-Shafi‘i said: Sufyan sometimes narrated it from Ata, from Aishah, and sometimes from Ata, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said this to Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).

Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Jarir ibn Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Mujahid, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Safwan, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) conquered Mecca, I said: I will put on my clothes—my house was on the way—and see what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) does. I went out and saw the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Companions coming out of the Ka‘bah. They had touched the House from the door to al-Hatim and had placed their cheeks against it, with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) among them.

Musaddad narrated to us; Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us; al-Muthanna ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, from Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, who said: I circumambulated with Abd Allah. When we came behind the Ka‘bah, I said: Will you not seek refuge? He said: We seek refuge in Allah from the Fire. He then continued until he touched the Black Stone and stood between the Corner and the Door. He placed his chest, face, arms, and palms there in this way, spreading them out, then said: This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do it.
