ʿAbdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us: Abu ʿAmir ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Nafiʿ narrated to us, from Kathir ibn Kathir, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: When what happened between Abraham and his family took place, he set out with Ishmael and Ishmael’s mother, carrying a small waterskin. Ishmael’s mother drank from it, and her milk flowed for her infant, until they reached Mecca. Abraham settled her beneath a large tree, then returned to his family. Ishmael’s mother followed him until they reached Kadaʾ. She called after him, “Abraham, to whom are you leaving us?” He said, “To Allah.” She said, “I am content with Allah.” She returned and drank from the waterskin, and her milk flowed for her child. When the water ran out, she said, “I should go and see whether I can find anyone.” She climbed Safa and looked, but saw no one. When she reached the valley, she ran to Marwa and did this repeatedly. Then she said, “I should check on the child.” She found him as he was, seeming to gasp near death, and she could not bear to stay. She went back to look for someone, until she had completed seven circuits between Safa and Marwa. Then she heard a voice and said, “Help us, if you can do any good.” It was Gabriel. He struck the ground with his heel, and water gushed forth. Ishmael’s mother was startled and began scooping it up. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Had she left it, the water would have flowed freely.” She drank from it, and her milk flowed for her child.

Some people of Jurhum passed through the valley and saw birds. They said, “Birds are only found where there is water.” They sent someone to investigate; he found the water and told them. They came to Ishmael’s mother and asked, “Will you let us stay with you?” They settled there, and when her son grew up, he married a woman from among them.

Later Abraham told his family, “I am going to visit those I left behind.” He came and greeted Ishmael’s wife, then asked where Ishmael was. She said he had gone hunting. Abraham told her, “When he returns, tell him to change the threshold of his door.” When Ishmael returned, she told him. He said, “You are the threshold, so return to your family.”

Abraham later visited again. Ishmael’s wife said, “Won’t you stay and eat and drink?” He asked, “What are your food and drink?” She replied, “Meat and water.” Abraham said, “O Allah, bless their food and drink.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “That blessing came through Abraham’s supplication.”

Abraham visited once more and found Ishmael behind the well of Zamzam, repairing his arrows. He said, “Ishmael, your Lord has commanded me to build a House for Him.” Ishmael said, “Obey your Lord.” Abraham said, “He has also commanded me that you help me with it.” Ishmael said, “Then I will.” They rose and began building. Abraham built while Ishmael handed him the stones, and they said, “Our Lord, accept this from us; You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” [Qur’an 2:127] When the structure grew high and the old man could no longer lift the stones, he stood on the Station of Abraham while Ishmael handed him the stones, and they repeated, “Our Lord, accept this from us; You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”

Musa ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Wahid narrated to us: Al-Aʿmash narrated to us: Ibrahim al-Taymi narrated to us, from his father, who said: I heard Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) say: I asked, “Messenger of Allah, which mosque was the first established on earth?” He said, “The Sacred Mosque.” I asked, “Then which?” He replied, “Al-Aqsa Mosque.” I asked, “How long was between them?” He said, “Forty years. Then, wherever prayer time finds you, pray there, for virtue is in that.”

ʿAbd Allah ibn Maslama narrated to us, from Malik, from ʿAmr ibn Abi ʿAmr, the freedman of al-Muttalib, from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw Uhud rise before him and said: ‘This is a mountain that loves us and that we love. O Allah, Ibrahim made Mecca sacred, and I declare sacred the area between its two lava fields.’ ʿAbd Allah ibn Zayd also reported it from the Prophet ﷺ.

ʿAbd Allah ibn Yusuf informed us: Malik informed us, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim ibn ʿAbd Allah, that Ibn Abi Bakr informed ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, from ʿAʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Do you not see that when your people built the Kaʿba, they left out some of Ibrahim’s foundations?’ I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, why do you not restore it to Ibrahim’s foundations?’ He said, ‘Were it not that your people have only recently left disbelief…’ ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar said: If ʿAʾisha heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then I think the Messenger of Allah ﷺ refrained from touching the two corners adjacent to al-Hijr only because the House had not been completed upon Ibrahim’s foundations. Ismaʿil said: ʿAbd Allah is Ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr.

ʿAbd Allah ibn Yusuf informed us: Malik ibn Anas informed us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Hazm, from his father, from ʿAmr ibn Sulaym al-Zuraqi, who informed me that Abu Humayd al-Saʿidi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, how should we invoke blessings upon you?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: ‘Say: O Allah, bless Muhammad, his wives, and his descendants as You blessed the family of Ibrahim; and bestow blessing upon Muhammad, his wives, and his descendants as You bestowed blessing upon the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.’

Qays ibn Hafs and Musa ibn Ismaʿil said: ʿAbd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us: Abu Qurra, Muslim ibn Salim al-Hamdani, narrated to us: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿIsa narrated to me, having heard ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: Kaʿb ibn ʿUjra met me and said, ‘Shall I give you a gift I heard from the Prophet ﷺ?’ I said, ‘Yes, give it to me.’ He said: ‘We asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “How should we invoke blessings upon you, people of the Household, since Allah has taught us how to greet you?” He said: “Say: O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bestow blessing upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You bestowed blessing upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”’

ʿUthman ibn Abi Shayba narrated to us: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from al-Minhal, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: The Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn, saying: ‘Your forefather used to seek protection by this for Ismaʿil and Ishaq: I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every devil and poisonous creature, and from every harmful, afflicting eye.’

Ahmad ibn Salih narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman and Saʿid ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘We have more right than Ibrahim to say, “My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.” He said, “Do you not believe?” He replied, “Yes, but so that my heart may be reassured.”’ (Qur’an 2:260) And may Allah have mercy on Lut! He used to seek refuge in a strong support. If I had remained in prison as long as Yusuf did, I would have answered the caller.’

Qutayba ibn Saʿid narrated to us: Hatim narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi ʿUbayd, from Salama ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a group of Aslam practicing archery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Shoot, descendants of Ismaʿil, for your father was an archer, and I am with Banu so-and-so.’ One of the two teams then stopped shooting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, ‘Why are you not shooting?’ They said, ‘Messenger of Allah, how can we shoot when you are with them?’ He said, ‘Shoot; I am with all of you.’

Qutayba ibn Saʿid narrated to us: Hatim narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi ʿUbayd, from Salama ibn al-Akwaʿ (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a group of Aslam practicing archery. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Shoot, descendants of Ismaʿil, for your father was an archer, and I am with Banu so-and-so.’ One of the two teams then stopped shooting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, ‘Why are you not shooting?’ They said, ‘Messenger of Allah, how can we shoot when you are with them?’ He said, ‘Shoot; I am with all of you.’

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim heard al-Muʿtamir, from ʿUbayd Allah, from Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ was asked, ‘Who is the most honored of people?’ He said, ‘The most honored are the most God-fearing.’ They said, ‘Prophet of Allah, that is not what we are asking you.’ He said, ‘Then the most honored of people is Yusuf, the Prophet of Allah, son of the Prophet of Allah, son of the Prophet of Allah, son of the intimate friend of Allah.’ They said, ‘That is not what we are asking you.’ He said, ‘Are you asking me about the origins of the Arabs?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘The best of you in the pre-Islamic period are the best of you in Islam, if they gain understanding.’

Abu al-Yaman informed us: Shuʿayb informed us: Abu al-Zinad narrated to us, from al-Aʿraj, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘May Allah forgive Lut! He did indeed seek refuge in a strong support.’

Mahmud narrated to us: Abu Ahmad narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Aswad, from ʿAbd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet ﷺ recited: ‘So, is there anyone who will take heed?’ (Qur’an 54:15).

Al-Humaydi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us: Hisham ibn ʿUrwa narrated to us, from his father, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Zamʿa, who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ. He mentioned the man who hamstrung the she-camel and said: ‘A man of status and strength among his people volunteered for it, like Abu Zamʿa.’

Muhammad ibn Miskin Abu al-Hasan narrated to us: Yahya ibn Hassan ibn Hayyan Abu Zakariyya narrated to us: Sulayman narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Dinar, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped at al-Hijr during the Tabuk expedition, he ordered them not to drink from its well or draw water from it. They said, ‘We have already kneaded dough with it and drawn water.’ He ordered them to discard that dough and pour out that water. It is also related from Sabra ibn Maʿbad and Abu al-Shamus that the Prophet ﷺ ordered the food to be discarded. Abu Dharr reported from the Prophet ﷺ: ‘Whoever kneaded dough with its water…’

Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir narrated to us: Anas ibn ʿIyad narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allah, from Nafiʿ, that ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed him: The people stopped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the land of Thamud, al-Hijr. They drew water from its well and kneaded dough with it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered them to pour out the water they had drawn, feed the dough to the camels, and draw water from the well that the she-camel used to visit. Usama corroborated this from Nafiʿ.

Muhammad narrated to me: ʿAbd Allah informed us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, who said: Salim ibn ʿAbd Allah informed me, from his father (may Allah be pleased with them), that when the Prophet ﷺ passed by al-Hijr, he said: ‘Do not enter the dwellings of those who did wrong unless you are weeping, lest what befell them befall you.’ Then he covered his face with his cloak while riding on the saddle.

ʿAbd Allah narrated to me: Wahb narrated to us: My father narrated to us: I heard Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, that Ibn ʿUmar said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Do not enter the dwellings of those who wronged themselves unless you are weeping, lest what befell them befall you.’

Ishaq ibn Mansur informed us: ʿAbd al-Samad narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: ‘The noble, son of the noble, son of the noble, son of the noble, is Yusuf son of Yaʿqub son of Ishaq son of Ibrahim, peace be upon them.’

ʿUbayd ibn Ismaʿil narrated to me, from Abu Usama, from ʿUbayd Allah, who said: Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid narrated to me, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, ‘Who is the most honored of people?’ He said, ‘The most God-fearing of them.’ They said, ‘That is not what we are asking you.’ He said, ‘Then the most honored of people is Yusuf, the Prophet of Allah, son of the Prophet of Allah, son of the Prophet of Allah, son of the intimate friend of Allah.’ They said, ‘That is not what we are asking you.’ He said, ‘Are you asking me about the origins of the Arabs? People are like ores; the best of them in the pre-Islamic period are the best of them in Islam, if they gain understanding.’ Muhammad ibn Salam narrated to me: ʿAbda informed us, from ʿUbayd Allah, from Saʿid, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, similarly.’
