Ahmad ibn 'Abdah and al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan al-Marwazi narrated to us; they said: al-Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas, who said: It was asked: Messenger of Allah, which of the people is most beloved to you? He said: 'Aishah. It was asked: And among the men? He said: Her father.

'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu Usamah narrated to us; al-Jurayri informed me, from 'Abdullah ibn Shaqiq, who said: I asked 'Aishah: Which of his Companions was most beloved to him? She said: Abu Bakr. I asked: Then which one? She said: 'Umar. I asked: Then which one? She said: Abu 'Ubaydah.

Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Talhi narrated to us; 'Abdullah ibn Khirash al-Hawshabi narrated to us, from al-'Awwam ibn Hawshab, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: When 'Umar became Muslim, Gabriel descended and said: Muhammad, the inhabitants of heaven have rejoiced at 'Umar's Islam.

Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Talhi informed us; Dawud ibn 'Ata al-Madani informed us, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from Ibn Shihab, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The first with whom the Real will shake hands is 'Umar; he will be the first greeted, and the first whose hand He will take and lead into Paradise.

'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Waki' narrated to us; Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Murrah, from 'Abdullah ibn Salamah, who said: I heard 'Ali say: The best of people after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is Abu Bakr, and the best of people after Abu Bakr is 'Umar.

Muhammad ibn al-Harith al-Misri informed us; al-Layth ibn Sa'd informed us; 'Uqayl narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, who informed me that Abu Hurayrah said: We were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: While I was asleep, I saw myself in Paradise, and there was a woman performing ablution beside a palace. I asked: Whose palace is this? She said: 'Umar's. I remembered his protective jealousy, so I turned away and left. Abu Hurayrah said: 'Umar wept and said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, Messenger of Allah. Would I feel protective jealousy?

Abu Salamah Yahya ibn Khalaf narrated to us; 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Makhul, from Ghudayf ibn al-Harith, from Abu Dharr, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Allah has placed the truth upon 'Umar's tongue; he speaks by it.
Chapter 14

Abu Marwan Muhammad ibn 'Uthman al-'Uthmani narrated to us; my father, 'Uthman ibn Khalid, narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, from his father, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Every prophet has a companion in Paradise, and my companion there is 'Uthman ibn 'Affan.

Abu Marwan Muhammad ibn 'Uthman al-'Uthmani narrated to us; my father, 'Uthman ibn Khalid, narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met 'Uthman at the mosque door and said: 'Uthman, Gabriel has informed me that Allah has married you to Umm Kulthum with a dowry like Ruqayyah's, and with a companionship like your companionship with her.

'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; 'Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Hassan, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a tribulation and spoke of its nearness. A man passed by with his head covered. The Messenger of Allah said: On that day, this man will be upon guidance. I sprang up and seized 'Uthman's arms, then faced the Messenger of Allah and asked: This one? He said: This one.

'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us; al-Faraj ibn Fadalah narrated to us, from Rabi'ah ibn Yazid al-Dimashqi, from al-Nu'man ibn Bashir, from 'Aishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Uthman, if Allah ever appoints you over this matter, and the hypocrites want you to remove the shirt with which Allah has clothed you, do not remove it. He said this three times. Al-Nu'man said: I asked 'Aishah: What kept you from informing the people of this? She said: I was made to forget it, by Allah.

Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Numayr and 'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; they said: Waki' narrated to us; Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid narrated to us, from Qays ibn Abi Hazim, from 'Aishah, who said: During his illness, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I wish some of my Companions were with me. We said: Messenger of Allah, shall we call Abu Bakr for you? He was silent. We said: Shall we call 'Umar for you? He was silent. We said: Shall we call 'Uthman for you? He said: Yes. 'Uthman came and was alone with him. The Prophet began speaking to him, and 'Uthman's face changed. Qays said: Abu Sahlah, 'Uthman's freedman, told me that 'Uthman ibn 'Affan said on the Day of the House: The Messenger of Allah entrusted me with a charge, and I am going to fulfill it. In 'Ali's narration: I am bearing it patiently. Qays said: They used to think that this was that day.

Chapter 15

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us; Shu'bah narrated to us, from Sa'd ibn Ibrahim, who said: I heard Ibrahim ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas narrating from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said to 'Ali: Would it not please you to have the same standing with me as Aaron had with Moses?

'Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Abu al-Husayn narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah informed me, from 'Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'an, from 'Adi ibn Thabit, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the pilgrimage he performed. He stopped along the road and ordered that the prayer be called collectively. He took 'Ali by the hand and said: Do I not have a greater claim over the believers than they have over themselves? They said: Indeed. He said: Do I not have a greater claim over every believer than he has over himself? They said: Indeed. He said: This is the ally of whoever has me as his guardian. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and oppose whoever opposes him.

'Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Waki' narrated to us; Ibn Abi Layla narrated to us; al-Hakam narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: Abu Layla used to spend the evenings talking with 'Ali. He would wear summer clothes in winter and winter clothes in summer. We said: Why do you not ask him? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me on the day of Khaybar while my eye was sore. I said: Messenger of Allah, my eye is sore. He spat in my eye, then said: O Allah, remove heat and cold from him. After that day I felt neither heat nor cold. He also said: I will send a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love, who does not flee. The people eagerly craned their necks for this, and he sent for 'Ali and gave it to him.

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Wasiti narrated to us; al-Mu'alla ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; Ibn Abi Dhi'b narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Hasan and al-Husayn are the leaders of the youth of the people of Paradise, and their father is better than they are.

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Suwayd ibn Sa'id, and Isma'il ibn Musa narrated to us; they said: Sharik narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Hubshi ibn Junadah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Ali is from me, and I am from him; no one discharges my duty on my behalf except 'Ali.

I am the foremost truthful one; no one after me will claim this except a liar. I prayed seven years before the people.
