Chapter 16: Freedom from arrogance, and having humility
“Allah has revealed to me that you should be humbletowards one another so that none of you boasts to another.”
Chapter 17: Modesty, shyness
“The Messenger ofAllah(ﷺ) was more modest than a virgin in her chamber. If hedislikedsomething, that could be seen in his face.”
“Everyreligion has its distinct characteristic, and the distinctcharacteristic of Islam is modesty.”
“Every religion has its distinct characteristic, and thedistinctcharacteristic of Islam is modesty.’”
“Among the words that people learned from theearlier Prophets are: ‘If you feel no shame, then do as you wish.’”
“Modesty is part of faith, and faith will be in Paradise.Obscenityin speech is part of harshness and harshness will be inHell.’”
“Thereis never any obscenity in a thing, but it mars it, and there isneverany modesty in a thing, but it adorns it.”
Chapter 18: Forbearance
“Whoever restrains his anger whenheis able to implement it, Allah will call him before all of creationon the Day of Resurrection, and will give him his choice of any hourithat he wants.”
“We were sitting with the Messenger ofAllah (ﷺ) and he said: ‘The delegations of ‘Abdul-Qais havecome toyou,’ and no one had seen anyone. While we were like that,they cameand alighted. They came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) andAshajj‘Ansari was left behind. He came afterwards, and halted atthehalting-place, made his she-camel kneel down, and changed of histraveling clothes, then he came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). TheMessenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: ‘O Ashajj, you have twocharacteristics that Allah likes: Forbearance and deliberation.’ Hesaid: ‘O Messenger of Allah, was I born with them or are theyacquired?’ He said: ‘No, rather it is something that you werebornwith.’”
“You have two characteristics that Allah likes:Forbearanceand modesty.”
“There is no gulp that brings greater reward with Allah than agulpof anger that a man swallows (suppresses), seeking thereby theFaceof Allah.”
Chapter 19: Grief and weeping
“Isee what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. Theheavenis creaking and it should creak, for there is no space in itthewidth of four fingers but there is an angel there, prostrating toAllah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little andweep much, and you would never enjoy women in your beds, and youwouldgo out in the streets, beseeching Allah.’”
“If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”
“Lestthey become as those who received the Scripture before, and the termwas prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many ofthem were rebellious.” [57:16]
“Do not laugh a lot, for laughing a lot deadens the heart.”
“The Prophet (ﷺ) said to me:‘Recite Qur’an to me,’ so I recited Surat An-Nisa’ to him,and when Ireached (the Verse): “How (will it be) then, when Webring forth fromeach nation a witness and We bring you as a witnessagainst thesepeople?” [4:41] I looked at him, and his eyes werefilled with tears.”
“We were with the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) at a funeral, and he sat at the edge of the grave weeping,untilthe ground became wet. Then he said: ‘O my brothers, prepareyourselves for something like this.’”
‘Weep, and if you cannot weep then pretend to weep.”
“There is no believing slave who sheds tears, even iftheyare like the head of a fly, out of fear of Allah, and they rolldownhis cheeks, but Allah will forbid him to the Fire.”
Chapter 20: Protecting (one's) deeds (by fearing their non-acceptance)
“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah,‘And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and alsodoother good deeds) with their hearts full of fear.” [23:60] Isthis theone who commits adultery, steals and drinks alcohol?’ Hesaid: ‘No, Odaughter of Abu Bakr’ – O daughter of Siddiq –rather it is a man whofasts and gives charity and prays, but hefears that those will not beaccepted from him.’”
