Chapter 19: Grief and weeping
“If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”
“Do not laugh a lot, for laughing a lot deadens the heart.”
Chapter 20: Protecting (one's) deeds (by fearing their non-acceptance)
“If a person prays in public and does it well, and he prays insecret and does it well, then Allah says: ‘This man is truly Myslave.’”
Chapter 22: Envy
“There is no (permissible) envy except in two cases: Amanwhom Allah has given wealth and caused him to dispose of it in aproper manner, and a man to whom Allah has given wisdom, and he actsin accordance with it and teaches it (to others).”
“The Messenger ofAllah(ﷺ) said: ‘There is no envy except in two cases. A man to whomAllah has given (knowledge of) the Qur’an, so he recites it nightandday, and a man to whom Allah has given wealth, so he spends itnightand day.’”
Chapter 23: Injustice
“There is no sin more deserving that Allah hasten the punishmentinthis world, in addition to what is stored up for him in theHereafter– than injustice and severing the ties of kinship.”
“It is sufficient evil for a man to look down on his Muslimbrother.”
“Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble towards oneanother and should not wrong one another.”
Chapter 24: Caution and piety
“Aperson will not reach the status of being one of those who have pietyuntil he refrains from doing something in which there is no sin, forfear of falling into something in which there is sin.”
“OAbu Hurairah, be cautious, and you will be the most devotedof peopleto Allah. Be content, and you will be the most grateful ofpeople toAllah. Love for people what you love for yourself, and youwill be a(true) believer. Be a good neighbor to your neighbors, andyou willbe a (true) Muslim. And laugh little, for laughing a lotdeadens theheart.”
Chapter 25: Praise
“The people of Paradise are those whose ears Allah fills withthepraise of people when they are listening, and the people of Hell-fireare those whom He fills their ears with condemnation when theyarelistening.”
Chapter 10: The livelihood of the family of Muhammad (saws)
“The Messengerof Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The family of Muhammad has only a Mudd offood,’or ‘The family of Muhammad does not have even a Mud offood.’”
Chapter 11: The beds of the family of Muhammad (saws)
It wasnarrated from ‘Ata’ bin Sa’ib from his father, from ‘Ali thatthe Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to ‘Ali and Fatimah, when theywerecovered with a Khamil belonging to them. And a Khamil is a whitevelvet made of wool. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had given this tothem as a wedding gift, along with a pillow stuffed with Idhkhir* anda water skin.
“I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)whenhe was (sitting) on a reed mat. I sat down and (saw that) he waswearing a waist wrap, and there was no other barrier between him andthe mat but his waist wrap, and the reed mat had made marks on hisside. And I saw a handful of barley, nearly a Sa’, and some acacialeaves, in a corner of the room, and a skin hanging up. My eyesflowedwith tears, and he said: ‘Why are you weeping, O son ofKhattab?’ Isaid: ‘O Prophet of Allah, why should I not weep?This mat has mademarks on your side, and this is all you haveaccumulated, I cannot seeanything other than what I see (here),while Chosroes and Caesar liveamong fruits and rivers. You are theProphet of Allah and His ChosenOne, and this is what you haveaccumulated.’ He said: ‘O son ofKhattab, does it not please you(to know) that (these things) are forus in the Hereafter and forthem in this world?’ He said: ‘Yes.’”
Chapter 12: The livelihood of the companions of the Prophet (saws)
“Then the Prophet (ﷺ) gave me seven dates,one date for each man.”
“The Messenger ofAllah(ﷺ) sent us, (we were) three hundred men, carrying our provisions on ournecks. Our provisions ran out until there would be for (every) manamong us one date (a day).” Then it was said: “O Abu ‘Abdullah,howcan one date satisfy a man?” He said: “When we no longer hadit, werealized how much it was worth. Then we came to the sea andfound awhale that had been thrown up by the sea, and we ate from itforeighteen days.”
Chapter 13: Construction and Demolition
“I had built a house to sheltermefrom the rain and the sun, during the time of Allah’s Messenger(ﷺ), and no creature of Allah helped me in building it.”
“We came to Khabbabtovisit him (when he was sick), and he said: ‘I have been sick for along time, and were it not that I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)say: “Do not wish for death,” I would have wished for it.’ Andhesaid: “A person will be rewarded for all his spending, exceptfor(what he spends) on dust,” or he said, “on building.”
Chapter 16: Freedom from arrogance, and having humility
“Noone will enter Paradise who has pride in his heart equal totheweight of a grain of mustard seed, and no one will enter Hell whohasfaith in his heart equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed.”
“Allah the Glorified, says: ‘Pride is My cloak and greatness Myrobe, and whoever competes with Me with regard to either of them, Ishall throw him into Hell.”
