Chapter 24: Caution and piety
“Being honorable is wealth and noble character is piety.’
“Iknow a word – (one of the narrators) ‘Uthman said: “a Verse”– which if all the people followed it, it would suffice them.”Theysaid: “O Messenger of Allah, which Verse?” He said: “Andwhosoeverfears Allah, He will make a way out for him.” [65:2]
Chapter 25: Praise
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) addressed us in Nabawah” orBanawah – he (one of the narrators) said: “Nabawah is near Ta’if”–“And said: ‘Soon you will be able to tell the people ofParadise fromthe people of Hell.’ They said: ‘How O Messenger ofAllah?’ He said:‘By praise and condemnation. You are Allah’switnesses over oneanother.’”
“A man came to theProphet(ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can I know, when Ihavedone something good, that I have done well, and if I have donesomething bad, that I have done a bad deed?’ The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: ‘If your neighbors say that you have done somethinggood,then you have done well, and if they say that you have donesomethingbad, then you have done something bad.’”
“A man said to the Messenger ofAllah (ﷺ): ‘How can I know when I have done well and when I havedone something bad?’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘If you hear yourneighbors saying that you have done well, then you have done well,andif you hear them saying that you have done something bad, thenyouhave done something bad.’”
“The people of Paradise are those whose ears Allah fills withthepraise of people when they are listening, and the people of Hell-fireare those whom He fills their ears with condemnation when theyarelistening.”
“I said to the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘(Whatdoyou say about when) a man does a deed for the sake of Allah, andpeople love him for it?’ He said: ‘That is the immediate gladtidingsof the believer.’”
“A man said: ‘O Messenger ofAllah, I do a good deed, then others find out about it and thatpleases me.’ He said: ‘You will have two rewards, the reward fordoingit in secret and the reward for doing it openly (so that othersmayfollow your example).’”
Chapter 26: Intention
“I heard the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) say: ‘Actions are but by the intention and every man willhavebut that which he intended. So he whose emigration was for AllahandHis Messenger, his emigration was for Allah and His Messenger.But hewhose emigration was for some worldly benefit or to take somewoman inmarriage, his emigration was for that which he migrated.”
Asimilar report (as above) was narrated from Ibn Abu Kabshah, fromhisfather, from the Prophet (ﷺ).
“People will be resurrected (and judged) according to theirintentions.”
“Peoplewill be gathered (on the Day of Resurrection) according totheirintentions.”
Chapter 27: Hope and life span
“Do you know what this is?” They said:“Allah andHis Messenger know best.” He said: “Man is the linein the middle, andthese lines to his side are the sicknesses andproblems that assailhim from all places. If one misses him, anotherwill befall him. Thesquare is his life span, at his neck; and theline outside it is (his)hope.”
“This isthe sonof Adam, and this is his life span at his neck,’ then hespread hishand in front of him and said: ‘And there is his hope.”
“The heart of an old man is young in the love of two things:Loveof life and much wealth.”
“The sonof Adam grows old but two things remain young in him: Hiscraving forwealth and his craving for a long life.”
“If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would love tohave a third along with them. Nothing could satisfy him except dust.And Allah accepts the repentance of the one who repents.”
“The ages of (the people in) my nation will be between sixty andseventy, and few of them will exceed that.”
Chapter 28: Persisting in a good deed
“By the One Who took his (ﷺ)soul, he did not die until most of his prayers were offered sittingdown. And the most beloved of deeds to him was a righteous deed whicha person persists in doing, even if it is something small.”
“There was a woman with me, andtheProphet (ﷺ) entered upon me and said: ‘Who is that?’ I said:‘So-and-so; she does not sleep,’” – she mentioned herexcessivepraying. “The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Keep quiet. Youshould do what youare able to, for by Allah, Allah does not gettired (of giving reward)but you get tired.’” She said: “Themost beloved of religious deed tohim was that in which a personpersists.”
