Abu Dharr reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘I know a statement’—‘a verse,’ according to ‘Uthman—‘which, if all people acted upon it, would suffice them.’ They asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, which verse?’ He replied: ‘Whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for him.’ (Qur’an 65:2)

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Zuhayr al-Thaqafi reported from his father: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) addressed us at al-Naba or al-Nabawah—the narrator said that al-Nabawah is near Ta’if—and said: ‘You will soon recognize the people of Paradise from the people of the Fire.’ They asked, ‘By what, Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘By good praise and bad praise. You are Allah’s witnesses, one for another.’

Kulthum al-Khuza‘i reported: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, how can I know that I have done well when I do something good, and that I have done badly when I do something bad?’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘When your neighbors say that you have done well, then you have done well; and when they say that you have done badly, then you have done badly.’

‘Alqamah ibn Waqqas reported that he heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab address the people and say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: ‘Deeds are only by intentions, and each person will have only what he intended. Whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration is for Allah and His Messenger; and whoever emigrated for some worldly gain or to marry a woman, his emigration is for that which he emigrated.’

Abu Kabshah al-Anmari reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘The likeness of this community is that of four people. One is given wealth and knowledge and uses his knowledge in managing his wealth, spending it rightly. Another is given knowledge but no wealth and says, “If I had wealth like his, I would do as he does.”’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘They are equal in reward.’ ‘A third is given wealth but no knowledge and squanders it, spending it improperly. A fourth is given neither knowledge nor wealth and says, “If I had wealth like his, I would do as he does.”’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘They are equal in sin.’

A similar report is transmitted through Ibn Abi Kabshah from his father, from the Prophet (peace be upon him), with two chains: one through Ishaq ibn Mansur, ‘Abd al-Razzaq, Ma‘mar, Mansur, and Salim ibn Abi al-Ja‘d; and another through Muhammad ibn Isma‘il ibn Samurah, Abu Usamah, Mufaddal, Mansur, and Salim ibn Abi al-Ja‘d.

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) drew a square, a line through its middle, lines beside that central line, and a line extending outside the square. He asked, ‘Do you know what this is?’ They replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘This is the human being: the central line. These lines beside it are afflictions that assail him from every direction; if one misses him, another strikes him. The surrounding square is his appointed term, and the line extending beyond it is his hope.’

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘This is the son of Adam, and this is his appointed term at the back of his neck.’ He then stretched his hand forward and said, ‘And there is his hope.’

‘A’ishah said: A woman was with me when the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered and asked, ‘Who is this?’ I said, ‘So-and-so; she does not sleep’—referring to her devotion. The Prophet said, ‘Enough; take on only what you can sustain. By Allah, Allah does not tire until you tire.’ She said, ‘The religious practice he loved most was that which a person keeps up.’

Hanzalah, the scribe, reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and spoke about Paradise and the Fire until it was as though we saw them with our own eyes. I then went to my family and children, laughed and played with them. Remembering our earlier state, I went out and met Abu Bakr and said, ‘I have become a hypocrite! I have become a hypocrite!’ Abu Bakr said, ‘We do that too.’ Hanzalah went and told the Prophet, who said, ‘Hanzalah, if you remained as you are when with me, the angels would shake your hands in your beds—or on your paths. Hanzalah, there is a time for this and a time for that.’
