Shaddad ibn Aws reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘The prudent person is one who holds himself to account and works for what comes after death. The incapable person is one who follows his desires and then indulges in wishful hopes about Allah.’

Anas reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) visited a young man who was dying and asked, ‘How are you feeling?’ He replied, ‘I hope in Allah, Messenger of Allah, and I fear my sins.’ The Messenger of Allah said, ‘When these two are together in a servant’s heart at a moment like this, Allah grants him what he hopes for and keeps him safe from what he fears.’

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘When a person is dying, the angels come to him. If he was righteous, they say, “Come out, good soul that was in a good body. Come out praised, and receive glad tidings of comfort, fragrant provision, and a Lord who is not angry.” This is said to it until it comes out. Then it is taken up to heaven and its gate is opened. They ask, “Who is this?” They say, “So-and-so.” It is said, “Welcome to the good soul that was in a good body. Enter praised, and receive glad tidings of comfort, fragrant provision, and a Lord who is not angry.” This is said to it until it reaches the heaven in which Allah, Mighty and Sublime, is.

If the person was evil, they say, “Come out, foul soul that was in a foul body. Come out condemned, and receive the news of scalding water and foul fluid, and other torments of its kind in pairs.” This is said to it until it comes out. Then it is taken up to heaven, but its gate is not opened. They ask, “Who is this?” It is said, “So-and-so.” Then it is said, “No welcome to the foul soul that was in a foul body. Return condemned, for the gates of heaven will not be opened to you.” It is sent down from heaven, then comes to the grave.’

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘If one of you is destined to die in a certain land, a need will drive him there. When he reaches the furthest point of his journey, Allah, Glorified is He, takes him. On the Day of Resurrection, the earth will say, “My Lord, this is what You entrusted to me.”’

‘A’ishah reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever dislikes meeting Allah, Allah dislikes meeting him.’ He was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, does disliking to meet Allah mean disliking death? We all dislike death.’ He replied, ‘No. This is at the time of death: when a person is given glad tidings of Allah’s mercy and forgiveness, he loves to meet Allah, and Allah loves to meet him; but when he is given news of Allah’s punishment, he dislikes meeting Allah, and Allah dislikes meeting him.’

Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘None of you should wish for death because of a hardship that has befallen him. If he must wish for it, let him say: “O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take my soul when death is better for me.”’

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘Every part of a human being will decay except one bone: the tailbone. From it, creation will be reassembled on the Day of Resurrection.’

Hani’, ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan’s freedman, reported: Whenever ‘Uthman stood by a grave, he wept until his beard became wet. He was asked, ‘You remember Paradise and the Fire but do not weep, yet you weep over this?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. If one is delivered from it, what comes after it is easier; but if one is not delivered from it, what comes after it is more severe.”’ He also said that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘I have never seen a sight except that the grave is more dreadful than it.’

Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘The deceased comes to the grave, and the righteous man is seated there without fear or distress. He is asked, “What were you following?” He replies, “I followed Islam.” He is asked, “Who is this man?” He replies, “Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He brought us clear proofs from Allah, and we believed him.” He is asked, “Have you seen Allah?” He replies, “It is not for anyone to see Allah.” An opening toward the Fire is made for him, and he sees it, parts of it crushing others. He is told, “Look at what Allah has protected you from.” Then an opening toward Paradise is made, and he sees its beauty and what it contains. He is told, “This is your place.” And he is told, “You held certainty, died upon it, and upon it you will be resurrected, if Allah wills.”

The evil man is seated in his grave in fear and distress. He is asked, “What were you following?” He replies, “I do not know.” He is asked, “Who is this man?” He replies, “I heard people saying something, so I said it too.” An opening toward Paradise is made for him, and he sees its beauty and what it contains. He is told, “Look at what Allah has turned away from you.” Then an opening toward the Fire is made, and he sees it, parts of it crushing others. He is told, “This is your place. You were in doubt, died upon it, and upon it you will be resurrected, if Allah, Exalted is He, wills.”

Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said regarding ‘Allah makes firm those who believe with the firm word’: ‘It was revealed concerning the punishment of the grave. He will be asked, “Who is your Lord?” and he will say, “My Lord is Allah, and my Prophet is Muhammad.” That is what Allah says: “Allah makes firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.”’ (Qur’an 14:27)

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘When one of you dies, his place is shown to him morning and evening. If he is among the people of Paradise, it is a place among the people of Paradise; and if he is among the people of the Fire, it is a place among the people of the Fire. He is told, “This is your place until you are resurrected on the Day of Resurrection.”’

‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Ka‘b al-Ansari reported that his father used to say that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘The believer’s soul is a bird that feeds among the trees of Paradise until it returns to its body on the day he is resurrected.’

Jabir reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘When the deceased is placed in the grave, the sun is made to appear to him at its setting. He sits up, wipes his eyes, and says, “Let me pray.”’

Abu Sa‘id reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘The two entrusted with the Trumpet have two horns in their hands—or, according to another wording, in their possession—and keep their gaze fixed, awaiting when they will be commanded.’

Abu Hurairah reported: A Jewish man in the market of Madinah said, ‘By the One who chose Moses above humankind!’ A man from the Ansar raised his hand and slapped him, saying, ‘You say this while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is among us?’ This was reported to the Messenger of Allah, who said: ‘Allah, Mighty and Sublime, says: “The Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and the earth will fall unconscious, except those whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and they will stand looking on.”’ (Qur’an 39:68) ‘I will be the first to raise my head, and I will see Moses holding one of the pillars of the Throne. I do not know whether he raised his head before me or was among those whom Allah, Mighty and Sublime, exempted. Whoever says that I am better than Yunus ibn Matta has lied.’

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), while on the pulpit, say: ‘The Compeller takes His heavens and His earths in His hand’—and he clenched his hand, repeatedly closing and opening it—‘then says, “I am the Compeller; I am the King. Where are the other compellers? Where are the arrogant?”’ The Messenger of Allah swayed to his right and left until I saw the pulpit shaking at its base, and I thought it might fall with the Messenger of Allah.’

‘A’ishah reported: I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, how will people be gathered on the Day of Resurrection?’ He replied, ‘Barefoot and naked.’ I asked, ‘Women too?’ He said, ‘Women too.’ I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, will they not feel ashamed?’ He replied, ‘A’ishah, the matter will be too grave for them to look at one another.’

Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘People will be presented three times on the Day of Resurrection. The first two presentations will involve disputation and excuses. At the third, the records will fly into people’s hands: some will take theirs in their right hand and some in their left.’

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited, ‘The Day when people will stand before the Lord of all worlds,’ (Qur’an 83:6) then said: ‘One of them will stand immersed in his sweat up to halfway up his ears.’

‘A’ishah reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about Allah’s words, ‘On the Day when the earth is changed to another earth, and the heavens as well,’ (Qur’an 14:48) and asked, ‘Where will people be that day?’ He replied, ‘On the Sirat.’
