Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by a man praying on a rock, went toward the outskirts of Makkah, and stayed for some time. When he returned, he found the man still praying in the same way. He stood and clasped his hands, then said three times, ‘People, observe moderation!’ He added, ‘For Allah does not tire until you tire.’

If he repents, desists, and seeks forgiveness, his heart is polished. If he continues, it grows. That is the rust Allah mentions in His Book: “No indeed! Rather, what they used to earn has rusted over their hearts.”’ (Qur’an 83:14)

Thawban reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘I certainly know people of my community who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds as white as the mountains of Tihamah, but Allah, Mighty and Sublime, will make them scattered dust.’ Thawban asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, describe them to us and make them clear, so we do not unknowingly become among them.’ He replied, ‘They are your brothers and of your own kind. They devote part of the night just as you do, but when they are alone with Allah’s prohibitions, they violate them.’

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘Allah, Mighty and Sublime, accepts a servant’s repentance so long as the death rattle has not reached his throat.’

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud reported that a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), mentioned that he had kissed a woman, and began asking what expiation was due. The Prophet did not answer him. Then Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed: ‘Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the early watches of the night. Good deeds remove bad deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.’ (Qur’an 11:114) The man asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, is this for me?’ He replied, ‘It is for whoever among my community acts upon it.’

Ma‘mar reported that al-Zuhri said, ‘Shall I tell you two remarkable reports?’ He told me that Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman related from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘A man had greatly wronged himself. When death came to him, he instructed his sons: “When I die, burn me, grind me to powder, then scatter me in the wind and into the sea. By Allah, if my Lord gains power over me, He will punish me with a punishment unlike any He has given anyone.”’ They did that to him. Then He said to the earth, ‘Return what you took,’ and there he was, standing. He asked him, ‘What made you do this?’ He replied, ‘Fear of You—or dread of You—my Lord.’ So He forgave him for that.’

Al-Zuhri reported from Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurairah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘A woman entered the Fire because of a cat she had tied up: she neither fed it nor released it to eat the creatures of the earth, until it died.’ Al-Zuhri added: ‘So that no person becomes complacent, and no person despairs.’

Abu Dharr reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: ‘My servants, all of you sin except those whom I have spared. So ask Me for forgiveness and I will forgive you. Whoever among you knows that I have power to forgive and seeks My forgiveness by My power, I will forgive him. All of you are astray except those whom I guide, so ask Me for guidance and I will guide you. All of you are poor except those whom I enrich, so ask Me and I will provide for you. If all your living and dead, your first and last, your moist and dry were gathered and had the heart of the most God-fearing of My servants, that would not increase My dominion by even a gnat’s wing. And if they gathered with the heart of the most wretched of My servants, that would not diminish My dominion by even a gnat’s wing. If all your living and dead, your first and last, your moist and dry gathered, and each asked for everything he could wish for, that would diminish My dominion no more than if one of you passed by the edge of the sea, dipped a needle into it, and withdrew it. That is because I am Generous and Majestic. My giving is by a word: when I will something, I merely say to it, “Be,” and it is.’

Ibn ‘Umar reported: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when a man from the Ansar came, greeted the Prophet, and asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, which believers are best?’ He replied, ‘Those with the best character.’ The man asked, ‘Which believers are wisest?’ He said, ‘Those who remember death most often and prepare best for what comes after it; they are the wisest.’
