Chapter 17: Modesty, shyness
“Thereis never any obscenity in a thing, but it mars it, and there isneverany modesty in a thing, but it adorns it.”
Chapter 21: Show-off and reputation
“Allah says: ‘I am the Most Self-Sufficient and I have no needfor an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else’ssakeas well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to himwhom heassociated with Me.’”
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)cameout to us when we were discussing Dajjal (False Christ) and said:‘Shall I not tell you of that which I fear more for you thanDajjal?’We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Hidden polytheism, when aman stands to prayand makes it look good because he sees a manlooking at him.’”
Chapter 22: Envy
“Envyconsumes good deeds just as fire consumes wood, and charityextinguishes bad deeds just as water extinguishes fire. Prayer is thelight of the believer and fasting is a shield against the Fire.”
Chapter 24: Caution and piety
“It was said to theMessenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘Which of the people is best?’ He said:‘Everyone who is pure of heart and sincere in speech.’ They said:‘Sincere in speech, we know what this is, but what is pure ofheart?’He said: ‘It is (the heart) that is pious and pure, withno sin,injustice, rancor or envy in it.’”
Chapter 10: The livelihood of the family of Muhammad (saws)
“One day some hot food wasbroughtto the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he ate. Then when he hadfinished he said: ‘Praise is to Allah, no hot food has entered mystomach since such and such a time.’”
Chapter 12: The livelihood of the companions of the Prophet (saws)
“Utbah bin Ghazwan delivered asermon on the pulpit and said: ‘I saw myself the seventh of sevenwiththe Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and we did not have any food toeatexcept the leaves of trees, until our gums hurt.’”
“When the following was reveled: “Then on that Day youshall beasked about the delights (you indulged in, in this world)![102:8]Zubair said: ‘What delights shall we be asked about? It isonly thetwo black ones, dates and water.’ He said: ‘It is goingto happen.’”
Chapter 14: Reliance and certain faith
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘If you weretorely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be givenprovision like the birds: They go out hungry in the morning and comeback with full bellies in the evening.”
“The heart of the son of Adam has an inclination towardseverydesirable thing, so whoever follows all of those inclinations,Allahwill not care which one will cause his doom. And whoever reliesuponAllah, Allah will protect him from the pain of scatteredinclinations.”
Chapter 16: Freedom from arrogance, and having humility
“Whoever humbles himself one degree for the sake of Allah, Allahwill raise him in status one degree, and whoever behaves arrogantlytowards Allah one degree, Allah will lower him in status one degree,until He makes him among the lowest of the low.”
“If a female slave amongthepeople of Al-Madinah were to take the hand of the Messenger ofAllah(ﷺ), he would not take his hand away from hers until she hadtakenhim wherever she wanted in Al-Madinah so that her needs may bemet.”
Chapter 17: Modesty, shyness
“Everyreligion has its distinct characteristic, and the distinctcharacteristic of Islam is modesty.”
Chapter 18: Forbearance
“We were sitting with the Messenger ofAllah (ﷺ) and he said: ‘The delegations of ‘Abdul-Qais havecome toyou,’ and no one had seen anyone. While we were like that,they cameand alighted. They came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) andAshajj‘Ansari was left behind. He came afterwards, and halted atthehalting-place, made his she-camel kneel down, and changed of histraveling clothes, then he came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). TheMessenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: ‘O Ashajj, you have twocharacteristics that Allah likes: Forbearance and deliberation.’ Hesaid: ‘O Messenger of Allah, was I born with them or are theyacquired?’ He said: ‘No, rather it is something that you werebornwith.’”
Chapter 19: Grief and weeping
“Isee what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. Theheavenis creaking and it should creak, for there is no space in itthewidth of four fingers but there is an angel there, prostrating toAllah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little andweep much, and you would never enjoy women in your beds, and youwouldgo out in the streets, beseeching Allah.’”
“Lestthey become as those who received the Scripture before, and the termwas prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many ofthem were rebellious.” [57:16]
“We were with the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) at a funeral, and he sat at the edge of the grave weeping,untilthe ground became wet. Then he said: ‘O my brothers, prepareyourselves for something like this.’”
‘Weep, and if you cannot weep then pretend to weep.”
Chapter 20: Protecting (one's) deeds (by fearing their non-acceptance)
“I heard the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ)say: ‘Deeds are like vessels. If the lower part is good thenthe upperpart will be good, and if the lower part is bad then theupper partwill be bad.’”
“Be moderate and adhere to moderation, for there is no one amongyou who will be saved by his deeds.” They said: “Not even you, OMessenger of Allah?” He said: “Not even me. Unless Allahencompassesme with mercy and grace from Him.”
