Chapter 20: Protecting (one's) deeds (by fearing their non-acceptance)

Mu’awiyah bin Abu Sufyan said

“I heard the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ)say: ‘Deeds are like vessels. If the lower part is good thenthe upperpart will be good, and if the lower part is bad then theupper partwill be bad.’”

It wasnarrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“If a person prays in public and does it well, and he prays insecret and does it well, then Allah says: ‘This man is truly Myslave.’”

It wasnarrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“Be moderate and adhere to moderation, for there is no one amongyou who will be saved by his deeds.” They said: “Not even you, OMessenger of Allah?” He said: “Not even me. Unless Allahencompassesme with mercy and grace from Him.”

Chapter 21: Show-off and reputation

It wasnarrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“Allah says: ‘I am the Most Self-Sufficient and I have no needfor an associate. Thus he who does an action for someone else’ssakeas well as Mine will have that action renounced by Me to himwhom heassociated with Me.’”

It wasnarrated from Abu Sa’d bin Abu Fadalah Al-Ansari, who was oneofthe Companions, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said

“When Allahassembles the first and the last on the Day of Resurrection, a dayconcerning which there is no doubt, a caller will cry out: ‘Whoeverused to associate anyone else in an action that he did for Allah, lethim seek his reward from someone other than Allah, for Allah is soself-sufficient that He has no need of any associate.’”

It wasnarrated that Abu Sa’eed said

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)cameout to us when we were discussing Dajjal (False Christ) and said:‘Shall I not tell you of that which I fear more for you thanDajjal?’We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Hidden polytheism, when aman stands to prayand makes it look good because he sees a manlooking at him.’”

It wasnarrated from Shaddad bin Aws that the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said

“The thing that I fear most for my nation is associatingotherswith Allah. I do not say that they will worship the sun or themoonor idols, but deeds done for the sake of anyone other than Allah,andhidden desires.”

It wasnarrated from Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri that the Prophet (ﷺ)said

“Whoever wants to be heard of, Allah will make him heard of, andwhoever wants to be seen, Allah will show him (i.e., make known tothepeople his true motives and intentions).”

It wasnarrated from Jundab that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said

“Whoeverwants to be heard of, Allah will make him heard of, andwhoever wantsto be seen, Allah will show him (i.e., expose his realmotives).”

Chapter 22: Envy

It wasnarrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud that the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said

“There is no (permissible) envy except in two cases: Amanwhom Allah has given wealth and caused him to dispose of it in aproper manner, and a man to whom Allah has given wisdom, and he actsin accordance with it and teaches it (to others).”

It wasnarrated from Salim that his father said

“The Messenger ofAllah(ﷺ) said: ‘There is no envy except in two cases. A man to whomAllah has given (knowledge of) the Qur’an, so he recites it nightandday, and a man to whom Allah has given wealth, so he spends itnightand day.’”

It wasnarrated from Anas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said

“Envyconsumes good deeds just as fire consumes wood, and charityextinguishes bad deeds just as water extinguishes fire. Prayer is thelight of the believer and fasting is a shield against the Fire.”

Chapter 23: Injustice

It wasnarrated from Abu Bakrah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“There is no sin more deserving that Allah hasten the punishmentinthis world, in addition to what is stored up for him in theHereafter– than injustice and severing the ties of kinship.”

It wasnarrated from ‘Aishah, the Mother of the Believers, that theMessenger of Allah (ﷺ) said

“The most quickly rewarded of gooddeeds are kindness and upholding the ties of kinship, and the mostquickly punished evil deeds are injustice and severing the ties ofkinship.”

It wasnarrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“It is sufficient evil for a man to look down on his Muslimbrother.”

It wasnarrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble towards oneanother and should not wrong one another.”

Chapter 24: Caution and piety

It wasnarrated from ‘Atiyyah As-Sa’di, who was one of the Companionsofthe Prophet (ﷺ), that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said

“Aperson will not reach the status of being one of those who have pietyuntil he refrains from doing something in which there is no sin, forfear of falling into something in which there is sin.”

It wasnarrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr said

“It was said to theMessenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘Which of the people is best?’ He said:‘Everyone who is pure of heart and sincere in speech.’ They said:‘Sincere in speech, we know what this is, but what is pure ofheart?’He said: ‘It is (the heart) that is pious and pure, withno sin,injustice, rancor or envy in it.’”

It wasnarrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“OAbu Hurairah, be cautious, and you will be the most devotedof peopleto Allah. Be content, and you will be the most grateful ofpeople toAllah. Love for people what you love for yourself, and youwill be a(true) believer. Be a good neighbor to your neighbors, andyou willbe a (true) Muslim. And laugh little, for laughing a lotdeadens theheart.”

It wasnarrated from Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said

“There is no wisdom like reflection, and no honor like goodmanners.”
