Abu Sa‘id reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘The Sirat will be laid across the middle of Hell, with thorns like the thorns of the sa‘dan plant. Then people will cross it: some will pass safely, some will be snagged by it. Then some will be delivered but held back, and some will be overturned into it.’

Hafsah reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ‘I hope, if Allah wills, that none of those who witnessed Badr and al-Hudaybiyyah will enter the Fire.’ I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, has Allah not said, “There is none of you who will not come to it; that is a decree your Lord has made binding”?’ (Qur’an 19:71) He replied, ‘Have you not heard Him say, “Then We will save those who were mindful of Allah, and leave the wrongdoers there, kneeling”?’ (Qur’an 19:72)

‘Abdullah reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in a tent, and he asked, ‘Would you be content to be a quarter of the people of Paradise?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘Would you be content to be a third of the people of Paradise?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘By Him in whose hand is my soul, I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise. That is because none but a Muslim soul will enter Paradise, and among the people of association you are like a white hair on the hide of a black bull, or a black hair on the hide of a red bull.’

Abu Sa‘id reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘On the Day of Resurrection, a prophet will come with one man; another prophet will come with two men; and a prophet will come with three, or more or fewer. He will be asked, “Did you convey the message to your people?” and will say, “Yes.” His people will be summoned and asked, “Did he convey it to you?” They will say, “No.” He will be asked, “Who will testify for you?” He will say, “Muhammad and his community.” The community of Muhammad will then be summoned and asked, “Did this man convey the message?” They will say, “Yes.” He will ask, “How do you know that?” They will say, “Our Prophet informed us that the messengers conveyed the message, and we believed him.”’ The Prophet said, ‘That is what Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Thus We have made you a middle community, so that you may be witnesses over humanity and the Messenger may be a witness over you.”’ (Qur’an 2:143)

Rifa‘ah al-Juhani reported: We returned with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he said: ‘By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, no servant believes and then remains rightly guided but that he will be led into Paradise. I hope they will not enter it until you and those among your descendants who are righteous have settled into dwellings in Paradise. My Lord, Mighty and Sublime, has promised me that seventy thousand of my community will enter Paradise without reckoning.’

Abu Umamah al-Bahili reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: ‘My Lord, Glorified is He, has promised me that seventy thousand of my community will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment. With every thousand, there will be another seventy thousand, and three handfuls taken by my Lord, Mighty and Sublime.’

Abu Burdah reported from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘When Allah gathers all creatures on the Day of Resurrection, the community of Muhammad will be given permission to prostrate. They will prostrate to Him for a long time. Then it will be said, “Raise your heads. We have made a number of you a ransom for you from the Fire.”’

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘This is a community shown mercy; its punishment is at its own hands. On the Day of Resurrection, each Muslim will be given a man from among the associators, and it will be said, “This is your ransom from the Fire.”’

He distributed one mercy among all creatures, through which they show mercy and compassion toward one another, and through which wild animals show tenderness to their young. Abu Sa‘id reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘On the day He created the heavens and the earth, Allah, Mighty and Sublime, created one hundred mercies. He placed one of them on earth, through which a mother is tender toward her child, animals are tender toward one another, and birds show tenderness. He kept back ninety-nine until the Day of Resurrection. When that day comes, Allah will complete them with this mercy.’

Mu‘adh ibn Jabal reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by me while I was riding a donkey and said, ‘Mu‘adh, do you know Allah’s right over His servants and His servants’ right over Allah?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘Allah’s right over His servants is that they worship Him and associate nothing with Him. And the servants’ right over Allah, if they do that, is that He not punish them.’

Ibn ‘Umar reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on one of his campaigns when he passed some people and asked, ‘Who are these people?’ They replied, ‘We are Muslims.’ A woman was tending her oven with her son beside her. Whenever its flames grew intense, she moved him away. She came to the Prophet and asked, ‘Are you the Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ She said, ‘May my father and mother be sacrificed for you: is Allah not the Most Merciful of those who show mercy?’ He said, ‘Indeed.’ She asked, ‘Is Allah not more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child?’ He said, ‘Indeed.’ She said, ‘A mother would not cast her child into the Fire.’ The Messenger of Allah bowed his head and wept. Then he raised his head toward her and said, ‘Allah punishes none of His servants except the defiant rebel, who rebels against Allah and refuses to say, “There is no god but Allah.”’

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ‘None will enter the Fire except the wretched.’ He was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, who is the wretched one?’ He replied, ‘The one who does not perform an act of obedience to Allah and does not refrain from an act of disobedience to Him.’

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited—or read—this verse: ‘He is worthy of being feared and worthy of forgiveness.’ (Qur’an 74:56) He said: ‘Allah, Mighty and Sublime, says: “I am worthy of being feared, so let no other deity be set up alongside Me. Whoever refrains from setting up another deity alongside Me, I am worthy to forgive him.”’

Abu al-Hasan al-Qattan reported a similar chain and wording: ‘Your Lord says, “I am worthy of being feared, so let no one associate another with Me; and I am worthy to forgive whoever refrains from associating another with Me.”’
