Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Yahya ibn Sulaym al-Taifi narrated to us, from Ismail ibn Kathir, from Asim ibn Laqit ibn Sabirah, from his father, who said: I said: ‘Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution.’ He replied: ‘Perform ablution thoroughly, and draw water deeply into the nose, except when you are fasting.’

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Zayd ibn al-Hubab and Dawud ibn Abdullah said: Malik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Whoever performs ablution should expel the water from his nose, and whoever cleans himself with stones should use an odd number.’

Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Zurarah narrated to us; Sharik ibn Abdullah al-Nakha‘i narrated to us, from Thabit ibn Abi Safiyyah al-Thumali, who said: I asked Abu Jafar, ‘Have you been told from Jabir ibn Abdullah that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution once for each part?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I asked: ‘And twice for each, and three times for each?’ He said: ‘Yes.’

Abu Bakr ibn Khallad al-Bahili narrated to us; Yahya ibn Said al-Qattan narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Ibn Abbas, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution, washing each part once.

Abu Kurayb narrated to us; Rishdin ibn Sad informed us; al-Dahhak ibn Sharhabil informed us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from Umar, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), during the campaign of Tabuk, perform ablution once for each part.

Mahmud ibn Khalid al-Dimashqi narrated to us; al-Walid ibn Muslim al-Dimashqi narrated to us, from Ibn Thawban, from Abdah ibn Abi Lubabah, from Shaqiq ibn Salamah, who said: I saw Uthman and Ali performing ablution three times for each part, and they said: ‘This is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution.’ Abu al-Hasan ibn Salamah said: Abu Hatim narrated it to us; Abu Nuaym narrated to us; Abd al-Rahman ibn Thabit ibn Thawban narrated to us, and he mentioned something similar.

Abd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim al-Dimashqi narrated to us; al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us; al-Awza‘i narrated to us, from al-Muttalib ibn Abdullah ibn Hantab, from Ibn Umar, that he performed ablution three times for each part and attributed this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu Bakr ibn Khallad al-Bahili narrated to me; Marhum ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Attar narrated to me; Abd al-Rahim ibn Zayd al-Ammi narrated to me, from his father, from Muawiyah ibn Qurrah, from Ibn Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution once for each part and said: ‘This is the ablution without which Allah accepts no prayer.’ Then he performed ablution twice for each part and said: ‘This is an adequate ablution.’ He then performed ablution three times for each part and said: ‘This is the most complete ablution. It is my ablution and the ablution of Allah’s intimate friend, Ibrahim. Whoever performs ablution in this way and then, when finished, says, “I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger,” the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he may enter through whichever one he wishes.’

Jafar ibn Musafir narrated to us; Ismail ibn Qanab Abu Bishr narrated to us; Abdullah ibn Aradah al-Shaybani narrated to us, from Zayd al-Hawari, from Muawiyah ibn Qurrah, from Ubayy ibn Kab, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water and performed ablution once for each part. He said: ‘This is the required form of ablution’—or he said: ‘It is the ablution of one whose prayer Allah will not accept if he omits it.’ Then he performed ablution twice for each part and said: ‘This is the ablution of one who does this; Allah grants him a double share of reward.’ Then he performed ablution three times for each part and said: ‘This is my ablution and the ablution of the Messengers before me.’

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us; Abu Dawud narrated to us; Kharijah ibn Musab narrated to us, from Yunus ibn Ubayd, from al-Hasan, from Utayy ibn Damrah al-Sadi, from Ubayy ibn Kab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘A devil assigned to ablution is called Walahan, so beware of the whispering that leads to excess in using water.’

Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; my maternal uncle, Ya‘la, narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Musa ibn Abi Aishah, from Amr ibn Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him about ablution. He showed him how to perform it, washing each part three times, then said: ‘This is ablution. Whoever exceeds this has done wrong and transgressed—or acted unjustly.’

Abu Ishaq al-Shafi‘i, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn al-Abbas, narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from Amr, who heard Kurayb say: I heard Ibn Abbas say: I spent the night at my maternal aunt Maymunah’s house. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) got up and performed a brief ablution from a waterskin. I got up and did as he had done.

Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa al-Himsi narrated to us; Baqiyyah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, from his father, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man performing ablution and said: ‘Do not waste water! Do not waste water!’

Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us; Qutaybah narrated to us; Ibn Lahi‘ah narrated to us, from Huyayy ibn Abdullah al-Ma‘afiri, from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Hubuli, from Abdullah ibn Amr, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sad while he was performing ablution and said: ‘What is this waste?’ Sad asked: ‘Can there be waste in ablution?’ He replied: ‘Yes, even if you are beside a flowing river.’
