Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Karīmah al-Ḥarrānī narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm, who narrated to me from Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Qatādah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The best things a man leaves behind are three: a righteous child who prays for him, a continuing charity whose reward reaches him, and knowledge that is acted upon after him.” Abū al-Ḥasan said: Abū Ḥātim narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd ibn Sinān al-Rahāwī narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Sinān—that is, his father—narrated to us: Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah narrated to me, from Fulayḥ ibn Sulaymān, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Qatādah, from his father, who said: I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and he mentioned a similar report.

Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Wahb ibn ʿAṭiyyah narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: Marzūq ibn Abī al-Hudhayl narrated to us: al-Zuhrī narrated to me: Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Agharr narrated to me, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Among the deeds and good works of a believer that reach him after his death are knowledge he taught and spread, a righteous child he left behind, a copy of the Quran he bequeathed, a mosque he built, a house he built for a wayfarer, a canal he dug, or charity he gave from his property while healthy and alive; these reach him after his death.”

Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd ibn Kāsib al-Madanī narrated to us: Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, from Ṣafwān ibn Sulaym, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Ṭalḥah, from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The best charity is for a Muslim to learn some knowledge and then teach it to his Muslim brother.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Suwayd ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Thābit, from Shuʿayb ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, from his father, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was never seen eating while reclining, nor walking with two men following close behind him. Abū al-Ḥasan said: Khāzim ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥajjāj al-Sāmī narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us. Abū al-Ḥasan said: Ibrāhīm ibn Naṣr al-Hamdānī, the owner of the qafīz measure, narrated to us: Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us.

Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us: Muʿān ibn Rifāʿah narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn Yazīd narrated to me, saying: I heard al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrate from Abū Umāmah, who said: On an extremely hot day, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed toward Baqīʿ al-Gharqad while people were walking behind him. When he heard the sound of their sandals, he felt uneasy about it, so he sat down and let them go ahead of him, lest any pride arise in him.

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Sufyān, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Nubayḥ al-ʿAnazī, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, walked, his Companions walked ahead of him, leaving the space behind him for the angels.

Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Rāshid al-Miṣrī narrated to us: al-Ḥakam ibn ʿAbdah narrated to us, from Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “People will come to you seeking knowledge. When you see them, say to them, “Welcome, welcome, the ones entrusted to us by the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him,” and teach them.” I asked al-Ḥakam what the word meant. He said, “Instruct them.”

ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir ibn Zurārah narrated to us: al-Muʿallā ibn Hilāl narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl, who said: We went to visit al-Ḥasan when he was ill until we filled the house. He drew up his legs, then said: We went to visit Abū Hurayrah when he was ill until we filled the house. He drew up his legs, then said: We went to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, until we filled the house. He was lying on his side. When he saw us, he drew up his legs and said: “After I am gone, people will come to you seeking knowledge. Welcome them, greet them, and teach them.” He said: By God, we met people who did not welcome us, greet us, or teach us. We used to go to them, but they treated us harshly.

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad al-ʿAnqazī informed us: Sufyān informed us, from Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī, who said: Whenever we came to Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, he would say, “Welcome, those entrusted to us by the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him.” The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to us: “People will follow you and come to you from every region of the earth to gain understanding of the religion. When they come to you, take good care of them.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: Among the supplications of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was: “O God, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, a supplication that is not heard, a heart that is not humble, and a soul that is never satisfied.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah, from Muḥammad ibn Thābit, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: “O God, benefit me through what You have taught me, teach me what will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge. Praise belongs to God in every circumstance.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Yūnus ibn Muḥammad and Surayj ibn al-Nuʿmān said: Fulayḥ ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maʿmar Abū Ṭuwālah, from Saʿīd ibn Yasār, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever learns knowledge by which the countenance of God is sought, but learns it only to gain some worldly advantage, will not find the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection”—meaning its scent. Abū al-Ḥasan said: Abū Ḥātim informed us: Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr narrated to us: Fulayḥ ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, and he related a report with similar wording.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us: Abū Karīb al-Azdī narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “Whoever seeks knowledge to dispute with the foolish, to vie with the scholars, or to turn the faces of people toward himself will be in the Fire.”

Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: Ibn Abī Maryam informed us: Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb informed us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Do not seek knowledge in order to vie with the scholars or dispute with the foolish, and do not seek the best places in gatherings by means of it. Whoever does so, the Fire, the Fire!”

Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ informed us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim informed us, from Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kindī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Burdah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “Some people among my community will gain understanding of the religion and recite the Quran. They will say that they will go to the rulers to get some of their worldly wealth while keeping their religion separate from them. That will not be so. Just as nothing can be gathered from the qatād thorn tree except thorns, nothing can be gained by being close to them except...” Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ said: “It seems he meant sins.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad and Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad al-Muḥāribī narrated to us: ʿAmmār ibn Sayf narrated to us, from Abū Muʿādh al-Baṣrī. And ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Isḥāq ibn Manṣūr narrated to us, from ʿAmmār ibn Sayf, from Abū Muʿādh, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Seek refuge in God from the pit of grief.” They said, “Messenger of God, what is the pit of grief?” He said: “A valley in Hell from which Hell itself seeks refuge four hundred times every day.” They said, “Messenger of God, who will enter it?” He said: “It has been prepared for Quran reciters who show off through their deeds. Among the most hated reciters to God are those who visit rulers.” Al-Muḥāribī said: “The tyrannical ones.” Abū al-Ḥasan said: Ḥāzim ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Muḥammad ibn Numayr said: Ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah al-Naṣrī, who was trustworthy; then he mentioned a report with similar wording through its chain. Ibrāhīm ibn Naṣr narrated to us: Abū Ghassān Mālik ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us: ʿAmmār ibn Sayf narrated to us, from Abū Muʿādh. Mālik ibn Ismāʿīl said: ʿAmmār said, “I do not know whether it was Muḥammad or Anas ibn Sīrīn.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad and al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah al-Naṣrī, from Nahshal, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, from al-Aswad ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said: If the people of knowledge had safeguarded knowledge and placed it with those worthy of it, they would have led the people of their time by means of it. But they offered it to people of worldly means to gain something of this world through it, so they became insignificant in their eyes. I heard your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Whoever makes his concerns one concern, the concern for his Hereafter, God will suffice him against the worries of this world. Whoever lets his concerns scatter among the affairs of this world, God will not care in which of its valleys he perishes.” Abū al-Ḥasan said: Ḥāzim ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr said: Ibn Numayr narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah al-Naṣrī, who was trustworthy; then he mentioned a report with similar wording through its chain.

Zayd ibn Akhzam and Abū Badr ʿAbbād ibn al-Walīd said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād al-Hunāʾī narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn al-Mubārak al-Hunāʾī narrated to us, from Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, from Khālid ibn Durayk, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever seeks knowledge for other than God, or intends by it something other than God, let him take his place in the Fire.”

Aḥmad ibn ʿĀṣim al-ʿAbādānī narrated to us: Bashīr ibn Maymūn narrated to us: I heard Ashʿath ibn Sawwār, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Ḥudhayfah, who said: I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Do not seek knowledge to vie with the scholars, dispute with the foolish, or turn people toward you. Whoever does so will be in the Fire.”

Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl informed us: Wahb ibn Ismāʿīl al-Asadī narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿīd al-Maqburī narrated to us, from his grandfather, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever learns knowledge in order to vie with the scholars, dispute with the foolish, and draw people toward himself, God will admit him to Hell.”
