Clothing (Kitab Al-Libas)

Musa ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from ʿAli ibn Zayd, from Ishaq ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Harith, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought a robe for a few and twenty young she-camels, then presented it to Dhu Yazan.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn narrated to us: Ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadr, from Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acquired a new garment, he would name it—whether a shirt or a turban—then say: ‘O Allah, praise belongs to You. You clothed me with it. I ask You for its good and the good for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made.’ Abu Nadr said: When one of the Prophet’s ﷺ companions put on a new garment, they would say to him: ‘May you wear it out, and may Allah Most High replace it for you.’

Musaddad narrated to us: ʿIsa ibn Yunus narrated to us, from al-Jurayri, with a chain similar to it.

Muslim ibn Ibrahim narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Dinar narrated to us, from al-Jurayri, with its chain and meaning. Abu Dawud said: ʿAbd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi did not mention Abu Saʿid in it. Hammad ibn Salamah said: from al-Jurayri, from Abu al-ʿAlaʾ, from the Prophet ﷺ. Abu Dawud said: Hammad ibn Salamah and al-Thaqafi heard it from the same source.

Nusayr ibn al-Faraj narrated to us: ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid narrated to us: Saʿid—meaning Ibn Abi Ayyub—narrated to us, from Abu Marhum, from Sahl ibn Muʿadh ibn Anas, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever eats food and then says, Praise belongs to Allah, who fed me this food and provided it for me without any power or strength of my own, will have his past and future sins forgiven. Whoever wears a garment and says, Praise belongs to Allah, who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any power or strength of my own, will have his past and future sins forgiven.

Ishaq ibn al-Jarrah al-Adhani narrated to us: Abu al-Nadr narrated to us: Ishaq ibn Saʿid narrated to us, from his father, from Umm Khalid daughter of Khalid ibn Saʿid ibn al-ʿAs, that a garment was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, including a small black-patterned cloak. He said: ‘Who do you think is most entitled to this?’ The people were silent, so he said: ‘Bring me Umm Khalid.’ She was brought, and he dressed her in it. Then he said twice: ‘Wear it until it is worn out, and may it be replaced.’ He kept looking at a red or yellow pattern on the cloak and saying: ‘Sanah, sanah, Umm Khalid.’ Sanah means beautiful in Abyssinian speech.

Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to us: al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khalid al-Hanafi, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah, from Umm Salamah, who said: The garment most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the shirt.

Ziyad ibn Ayyub narrated to us: Abu Tumaylah narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn Khalid narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah, from his father, from Umm Salamah, who said: No garment was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ than the shirt.

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzali narrated to us: Muʿadh ibn Hisham narrated to us, from his father, from Budayl ibn Maysarah, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from Asmaʾ daughter of Yazid, who said: The sleeve of the Messenger of Allah’s ﷺ shirt reached his wrist.

Qutaybah ibn Saʿid and Yazid ibn Khalid ibn Mawhab narrated to us—the wording is shared—that al-Layth, meaning Ibn Saʿd, related to them, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abi Mulaykah, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed some cloaks and gave Makhramah nothing. Makhramah said: ‘My son, come with me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ I went with him. He said: ‘Go in and call him for me.’ I called him, and he came out to him wearing one of those cloaks. He said: ‘I had kept this for you.’ Makhramah looked at it—this addition is from Ibn Mawhab; then both narrators agree—and Makhramah was pleased. Qutaybah said: In Ibn Abi Mulaykah’s version, he did not name him.

Muhammad ibn ʿIsa narrated to us: Abu ʿAwanah narrated to us. And Muhammad—meaning Ibn ʿIsa—narrated to us, from Sharik, from ʿUthman ibn Abi Zurʿah, from al-Muhajir al-Shami, from Ibn ʿUmar—Sharik’s version traces it to the Prophet ﷺ—who said: ‘Whoever wears a garment of fame, Allah will make him wear a similar garment on the Day of Resurrection.’ Abu ʿAwanah added: ‘Then fire will be kindled in it.’

Musaddad narrated to us: Abu ʿAwanah narrated to us, who said: A garment of disgrace.

ʿUthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us: Abu al-Nadr narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Thabit narrated to us: Hassan ibn ʿAtiyyah narrated to us, from Abu Munib al-Jurashi, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Whoever imitates a people is one of them.’

Yazid ibn Khalid ibn Yazid ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mawhab al-Ramli and Husayn ibn ʿAli narrated to us; they said: Ibn Abi Zaʾidah narrated to us, from his father, from Musʿab ibn Shaybah, from Safiyyah daughter of Shaybah, from ʿAishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out wearing a black woolen mantle with patterned borders. Husayn said: Yahya ibn Zakariyya narrated to us. Ibrahim ibn al-ʿAlaʾ al-Zubaydi narrated to us: Ismaʿil ibn ʿAyyash narrated to us, from ʿAqil ibn Mudrik, from Luqman ibn ʿAmir, from ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sulami, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for clothing, and he gave me two coarse garments. I saw myself as the best clothed among my companions.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn narrated to us: Abu ʿAwanah narrated to us, from Qatadah, from Abu Burdah, who said: My father said to me: ‘My son, had you seen us with our Prophet ﷺ when rain fell upon us, you would have thought our smell was that of sheep.’

ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn narrated to us: ʿUmarah ibn Zadhan informed us, from Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, that the king of Dhu Yazan presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a robe that he had acquired for thirty-three camels—or thirty-three she-camels—and he accepted it.

And Musa narrated to us: Sulayman—meaning Ibn al-Mughirah—narrated to us, with the same meaning, from Humayd ibn Hilal, from Abu Burdah, who said: I visited ʿAishah, may Allah be pleased with her, and she brought out for us a coarse waist-wrapper made in Yemen and a felted cloak. She swore by Allah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away wearing these two garments.
