Chapter 32
مَا جَاءَ فِي الصَّلاَةِ عَلَى الْقَبْرِ

Abu Kurayb narrated to us; Sa‘id ibn Shurahbil narrated to us, from Ibn Lahi‘ah, from Ubaydullah ibn al-Mughirah, from Abu al-Haytham, from Abu Sa‘id, who said: ‘A Black woman used to sweep the mosque. She died at night, and the next morning the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of her death. He said, “Why did you not inform me?” He went out with his Companions and stood at her grave. He performed the funeral prayer over her with the people behind him, supplicated for her, and then departed.’

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Abd al-A‘la narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah: ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The Negus has died.” The Messenger of Allah and his Companions went out to al-Baqi‘. We formed rows behind him, and the Messenger of Allah stepped forward and said four takbirs.’

Yahya ibn Khalaf and Muhammad ibn Ziyad narrated to us; they said: Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us. And Amr ibn Rafi narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us. Both routes go through Yunus, from Abu Qilabah, from Abu al-Muhallab, from Imran ibn Husayn: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Your brother the Negus has died, so perform the prayer over him.’ He stood, and we prayed behind him. I was in the second row, and he performed the prayer for him with two rows.

Isma‘il ibn Musa narrated to us; Sharik ibn Abdullah narrated to us, from Asim ibn Ubaydullah, from Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Rabi‘ah, from Aishah, who said: ‘I could not find him—meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—then I found him at al-Baqi‘. He said, “Peace be upon you, abode of a believing people. You have gone ahead of us, and we will join you. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward and do not put us to trial after them.”’

And Abdullah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us; Abu Khalid al-Ahmar narrated to us; al-Hajjaj narrated to us, from Nafi‘, from Ibn Umar, who said: ‘When the deceased was placed in the grave, the Prophet would say, “In the name of Allah and according to the way of the Messenger of Allah.”’ Abu Khalid said that on one occasion the wording was, ‘In the name of Allah and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.’ Hisham’s report has the wording, ‘In the name of Allah, in the path of Allah, and according to the way of the Messenger of Allah.’
