The Rites of Hajj (Kitab Al-Manasik Wa'l-Hajj)

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal narrated to us; Waki narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Abbas, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) designated al-Aqiq for the people of the East.

Ahmad ibn Salih narrated to us; Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Yuhannas, from Yahya ibn Abi Sufyan al-Akhnasi, from his grandmother Hukaymah, from Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever enters ihram for Hajj or Umrah from al-Masjid al-Aqsa to al-Masjid al-Haram will be forgiven for his past and future sins—or Paradise will be guaranteed for him. Abdullah was unsure which of the two wordings he said. Abu Dawud said: May Allah have mercy on Waki; he entered ihram from Bayt al-Maqdis, meaning that he set out for Mecca.

Abu Mamar Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Abi al-Hajjaj narrated to us; Abd al-Warith narrated to us; Utbah ibn Abd al-Malik al-Sahmi narrated to us; Zurarah ibn Kuraym narrated to me that al-Harith ibn Amr al-Sahmi told him: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was at Mina or Arafat and people had gathered around him. Bedouins would come, and when they saw his face they would say: This is a blessed face. He designated Dhat Irq for the people of Iraq.

Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us; Abdah narrated to us, from Ubayd Allah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim, from his father, from Aishah, who said: Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr at al-Shajarah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Abu Bakr to have her bathe and enter ihram.

Muhammad ibn Isa and Ismail ibn Ibrahim Abu Mamar narrated to us; they said: Marwan ibn Shuja narrated to us, from Khusayf, from Ikrimah, Mujahid, and Ata, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a menstruating woman or a woman in postpartum bleeding reaches the appointed place, she should bathe and enter ihram, and perform all the rites except circumambulation of the House. Abu Mamar's version adds: until she becomes pure. Ibn Isa did not mention Ikrimah and Mujahid; he said from Ata, from Ibn Abbas. Ibn Isa also omitted the word all, saying: the rites except circumambulation of the House.

Al-Qanabi and Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us; they said: Malik narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim, from his father, from Aishah, who said: I used to apply fragrance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for his ihram before he entered ihram, and when he exited it before he circumambulated the House.

Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah al-Bazzaz narrated to us; Ismail ibn Zakariyya narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn Ubayd Allah, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Aishah, who said: It is as if I can still see the gleam of musk in the parting of the Messenger of Allah's hair while he was in ihram.

Sulayman ibn Dawud al-Mahri narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim—meaning Ibn Abdullah—from his father, who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) enter ihram with his hair matted.

Ubayd Allah ibn Umar narrated to us; Abd al-Ala narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) matted his hair with honey.

Al-Nufayli narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Salamah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us. Muhammad ibn al-Minhal also narrated to us; Yazid ibn Zuray narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, in meaning. Abdullah—meaning Ibn Abi Najih—said: Mujahid narrated to me, from Ibn Abbas: In the year of al-Hudaybiyyah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) offered as a sacrificial animal among his offerings a camel that had belonged to Abu Jahl, with a silver nose-ring. Ibn al-Minhal said: A gold nose-ring. Al-Nufayli added: He did this to anger the polytheists.

Ibn al-Sarh narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman, from Aishah, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed one cow on behalf of the family of Muhammad during the Farewell Pilgrimage.

Amr ibn Uthman and Muhammad ibn Mihran al-Razi narrated to us; they said: al-Walid narrated to us, from al-Awzai, from Yahya, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed one cow on behalf of his wives who had performed Umrah.

Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi and Hafs ibn Umar narrated to us, in meaning; they said: Shubah narrated to us, from Qatadah. Abu al-Walid said: I heard Abu Hassan, from Ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed the noon prayer at Dhu al-Hulayfah. He then called for a sacrificial camel, made a mark on the right side of its hump, let the blood flow from it, and garlanded it with two sandals. Then his riding camel was brought. When he mounted it and it stood on the open plain of al-Bayda, he began the talbiyah for Hajj.

Musaddad narrated to us; Yahya narrated to us, from Shubah, with this hadith in the meaning of Abu al-Walid's version. He said: Then he pressed the blood out with his hand. Abu Dawud said: Hammam narrated it with the wording: He pressed the blood out with his finger. Abu Dawud said: This is a practice of the people of Basra in which they are distinctive.

Abd al-Ala ibn Hammad narrated to us; Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwan, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out in the year of al-Hudaybiyyah. When he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, he garlanded the sacrificial animals, marked them, and entered ihram.

Hannad narrated to us; Waki narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur and al-Amash, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Aishah: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent garlanded sheep as sacrificial offerings.

Al-Nufayli narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Abu Abd al-Rahim—Abu Dawud said that Abu Abd al-Rahim was Khalid ibn Abi Yazid, Muhammad ibn Salamah's maternal uncle, and that Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated from him—from Jahm ibn al-Jarud, from Salim ibn Abdullah, from his father, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab offered a prized camel as a sacrifice, and he was offered three hundred dinars for it. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Messenger of Allah, I offered a prized camel as a sacrifice, and I was offered three hundred dinars for it. May I sell it and buy sacrificial camels with the price? He replied: No. Slaughter that very camel. Abu Dawud said: This was because Umar had marked it.

Abdullah ibn Maslamah al-Qanabi narrated to us; Aflah ibn Humayd narrated to us, from al-Qasim, from Aishah, who said: I twisted the garlands for the sacrificial camels of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with my own hands. Then he marked and garlanded them and sent them to the House, while he remained in Medina. Nothing that had been lawful to him became forbidden to him.

Yazid ibn Khalid al-Ramli al-Hamdani and Qutaybah ibn Said narrated to us that al-Layth ibn Sad narrated to them, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwah and Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman, from Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to send sacrificial offerings from Medina. I would twist the garlands for his sacrificial animals; after that, he would refrain from nothing that a pilgrim in ihram refrains from.

Musaddad narrated to us; Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us; Ibn Awn narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad and from Ibrahim—he claimed to have heard it from both, but did not distinguish which wording belonged to which narrator. They both said: The Mother of the Believers said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent sacrificial animals, and I twisted their garlands by hand from wool that we had. The next morning he was in an unrestricted state among us, doing what a man does with his wife.
