Sulayman ibn Harb and Musaddad narrated to us; they said: Hammad narrated to us. Musaddad also narrated to us; Abd al-Warith narrated to us—and this is Musaddad's version—from Abu al-Tayyah, from Musa ibn Salamah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a man of the Aslam tribe with eighteen sacrificial camels. He asked: What if one of them becomes too weak to continue? He replied: Slaughter it, dip its sandal in its blood, then mark its side with it. You and none of your companions—or anyone in your party—must eat from it. Abu Dawud said: The unique addition in this report is: You and none of your party must eat from it. In Abd al-Warith's version, it says: Then place it against its side, instead of strike it. Abu Dawud said: I heard Abu Salamah say: If you establish the chain and the meaning, that is sufficient.

Ibrahim ibn Musa al-Razi narrated to us; Isa informed us. Musaddad also narrated to us; Isa informed us—and this is Ibrahim's wording—from Thawr, from Rashid ibn Sad, from Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Luhay, from Abdullah ibn Qurt, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: The greatest days in the sight of Allah, Blessed and Exalted, are the Day of Sacrifice, followed by the Day of Rest. Isa said: Thawr said this is the second day. Five or six sacrificial camels were brought near to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and they began pressing toward him, each eager to be the one he started with. When their sides had fallen, he spoke a word quietly, which I could not understand. I asked what he had said. He replied: Whoever wishes may cut off a piece.

When he had finished, he mounted his mule and had Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, ride behind him.

Muhammad ibn Mansur narrated to us; Yaqub—meaning Ibn Ibrahim—narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Khusayf ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jazari narrated to me, from Said ibn Jubayr, who said: I said to Abdullah ibn Abbas: Abu al-Abbas, I am amazed at how the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) differ about when he entered ihram. He replied: I know this better than anyone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Hajj only once, and that is why they differed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to perform Hajj. After praying two units in his mosque at Dhu al-Hulayfah, he entered ihram where he was seated and began the talbiyah for Hajj when he had finished praying. Some people heard this and retained it from him. Then he mounted, and when his she-camel stood up beneath him, he began the talbiyah; some people heard it then, because people arrived in groups. They heard him saying the talbiyah as his she-camel stood up and thought that was when he had first begun it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then continued, and when he climbed the rise of al-Bayda, he began the talbiyah. Some people heard that and thought he had begun it then. By Allah, he entered ihram where he prayed; he began the talbiyah as his she-camel stood up, and he began it when he climbed the rise of al-Bayda. Said said: Whoever follows Abdullah ibn Abbas's view begins the talbiyah at his prayer place after finishing the two units.

Al-Qanabi narrated to us, from Malik, from Musa ibn Uqbah, from Salim ibn Abdullah, from his father, who said: This plain of al-Bayda is where you falsely claim the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began his talbiyah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began it only near the mosque—meaning the mosque of Dhu al-Hulayfah.

Al-Qanabi narrated to us, from Malik, from Said ibn Abi Said al-Maqburi, from Ubayd ibn Jurayj, who said to Abdullah ibn Umar: Abu Abd al-Rahman, I have seen you do four things that I have not seen any of your Companions do. He asked: What are they, Ibn Jurayj? He said: I have seen you touch only the two Yemeni corners; wear smooth leather sandals; dye with yellow; and, when in Mecca, wait until the Day of Tarwiyah to begin the talbiyah, while the people begin when they see the new moon. Ibn Umar replied: As for the corners, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) touch only the two Yemeni corners. As for the smooth leather sandals, I saw him wear hairless sandals and perform ablution while wearing them, so I like to wear them. As for yellow dye, I saw him dye with it, so I like to dye with it. As for beginning the talbiyah, I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) begin until his riding camel set off.

Sulayman ibn Harb said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us; and Musa ibn Ismail narrated to us: Hammad—meaning Ibn Salamah—narrated to us; and Musa narrated to us: Wuhayb narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from Aishah, who said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the new moon of Dhu al-Hijjah was due. When we reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, he said: Whoever wishes to enter ihram for Hajj may do so, and whoever wishes to enter ihram for Umrah may do so. In Musa's version from Wuhayb, he said: Had I not brought a sacrificial offering, I would have entered ihram for Umrah. In Hammad ibn Salamah's version, he said: As for me, I will enter ihram for Hajj, because I have a sacrificial offering with me. The narrators then agree: I was among those who entered ihram for Umrah. On part of the journey I began menstruating. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in while I was crying and asked: What makes you cry? I said: I wish I had not come this year. He said: Abandon your Umrah, undo your hair, and comb it. Musa's version adds: Enter ihram for Hajj. Sulayman's version says: Do what the Muslims do during their Hajj. On the night of departure, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Abd al-Rahman to take her to al-Tanim. Musa added: She entered ihram for an Umrah in place of her first Umrah and circumambulated the House; Allah thus completed her Umrah and Hajj. Hisham said: There was no sacrificial offering in any of this. Abu Dawud said: Musa added in Hammad ibn Salamah's version that Aishah became pure on the night of al-Batha.

Some of us entered ihram for Umrah, some for Hajj and Umrah together, and some for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered ihram for Hajj.
