Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; he said: I heard al-Muthannā ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ say: ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb told me, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I circumambulated with ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr. When we finished the seven circuits, we performed two rakʿahs behind the Kaʿbah. I said, “Shall we seek protection from God from the Fire?” He said, “I seek protection from God from the Fire.” Then he went on, touched the Corner, and stood between the Stone and the Door. He pressed his chest, hands, and cheek against it, then said, “This is how I saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) do.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; they said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: We set out with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), intending nothing but the Hajj. When we were at Sarif, or near Sarif, I began menstruating. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) came in while I was crying and said, “What is the matter? Have you begun menstruating?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “This is something God has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Perform all the rites, except that you must not circumambulate the House.” She said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed cattle on behalf of his wives.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār and Abū Muṣʿab narrated to us; they said: Mālik ibn Anas narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim told me, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Hajj alone.

Naṣr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Isḥāq narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: We set out with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) for Makkah, and I heard him say, “Here I am, for an ʿumrah and a Hajj.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; they said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿAbdah ibn Abī Lubābah, who said: I heard Abū Wāʾil, Shaqīq ibn Salamah, say: I heard al-Ṣubayy ibn Maʿbad say: I was a Christian man, then I embraced Islam and entered the consecrated state for Hajj and ʿumrah together. Salmān ibn Rabīʿah and Zayd ibn Ṣūḥān heard me entering that state for both together at al-Qādisiyyah, and said, “This man is more lost than his camel.” Their words felt as though they had placed a mountain on me. I came to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and told him about it. He turned to them and reproached them, then turned to me and said, “You have been guided to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); you have been guided to the Sunnah of the Prophet.” In his version of the report, Hishām said: Shaqīq said, “I often went with Masrūq to ask him about it.” ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Wakīʿ, Abū Muʿāwiyah, and my maternal uncle Yaʿlā narrated to us; they said: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Shaqīq, from al-Ṣubayy ibn Maʿbad, who said: I had only recently been a Christian when I embraced Islam, and I spared no effort in striving, so I entered the consecrated state for Hajj and ʿumrah together. He mentioned a report similar to the above.

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us: Ḥajjāj narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan ibn Saʿd, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Abū Ṭalḥah informed me that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) combined the Hajj and ʿumrah.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Yaʿlā ibn Ḥārith al-Muḥāribī narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from Ghaylān ibn Jāmiʿ, from Layth, from ʿAṭāʾ, Ṭāwūs, and Mujāhid, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, Ibn ʿUmar, and Ibn ʿAbbās, that when the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions arrived, they performed only one circumambulation for their ʿumrah and Hajj.

Hannād ibn al-Sarī narrated to us: ʿAbthar ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us, from Ashʿath, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed one circumambulation for the Hajj and ʿumrah.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: Muslim ibn Khālid al-Zanjī narrated to us: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that he arrived combining Hajj and ʿumrah, circumambulated the House seven times, and walked between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah. Then he said, “This is how the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) did.”

Muḥriz ibn Salamah narrated to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever enters the consecrated state for Hajj and ʿumrah together, one circumambulation suffices for both. He does not leave the consecrated state until he has completed his Hajj, and he leaves both rites together.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Muḥammad ibn Muṣʿab narrated to us. [A second chain:] ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dimashqī—that is, Duḥaym—narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us. Both said: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr told me: ʿIkrimah told me, saying: Ibn ʿAbbās narrated to us: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb told me: I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) say while he was at al-ʿAqīq, “A visitor came to me from my Lord and said: Pray in this blessed valley and say: an ʿumrah within a Hajj.” This is the wording according to Duḥaym.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; they said: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Misʿar, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Maysarah, from Ṭāwūs, from Surāqah ibn Juʿshum, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) stood to address the people in this valley and said, “Indeed, ʿumrah has become part of Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from al-Jurayrī, from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, Yazīd ibn al-Shikhkhīr, from his brother Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr, who said: ʿImrān ibn al-Ḥuṣayn said to me, “I am telling you a report that may benefit you after today. Know that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) granted ʿumrah to a group of his family during the first ten days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. The Messenger of God did not forbid it, and no abrogation of it was revealed.” Later, a man expressed whatever opinion he wished about it.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; they said: Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us. [A second chain:] Naṣr ibn ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī narrated to us: my father narrated to me. They said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from ʿUmārah ibn ʿUmayr, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Mūsā, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, who used to give fatwas permitting tamattuʿ. A man said to him, “Hold back on some of your fatwas, for you do not know what the Commander of the Faithful has introduced regarding the pilgrimage rites after you.” Later I met him and asked him about it. He said: ʿUmar said, “I know that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) did it, as did his Companions. But I disliked that they should keep resting with their wives under the arāk trees, then set out for Hajj with their heads still dripping [from washing after intercourse].”

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dimashqī narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: al-Awzāʿī narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: We entered the consecrated state with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) for Hajj alone, not combining it with ʿumrah. We arrived in Makkah four nights into Dhū al-Ḥijjah. After we circumambulated the House and walked between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us to make it an ʿumrah and leave the consecrated state, making marital relations lawful for us. We said among ourselves, “There are only five days between us and ʿArafah; we will go there while our penises are dripping with semen.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I am the most dutiful and truthful of you. Were it not for the sacrificial animals, I would leave the consecrated state.” Surāqah ibn Mālik said, “Is this dispensation of ours for this year only, or forever?” He said, “No, rather forever and ever.”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: We set out with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) with five nights remaining in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, intending nothing but Hajj. When we arrived and drew near, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed those who had no sacrificial animal to leave the consecrated state, and everyone did so except those who had a sacrificial animal. On the Day of Sacrifice, beef was brought to us, and it was said that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) had sacrificed it on behalf of his wives.
