Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to us: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions set out, and we entered the consecrated state for Hajj. When we arrived in Makkah, he said, “Make your Hajj an ʿumrah.” The people said, “Messenger of God, we entered the consecrated state for Hajj, so how can we make it an ʿumrah?” He said, “Look at what I instruct you to do, and do it.” They repeated their objection to him, and he became angry. He went away until he entered upon ʿĀʾishah, angry. She saw anger on his face and said, “May God be angry with whoever made you angry.” He said, “Why should I not be angry when I give an instruction and am not obeyed?”

Bakr ibn Khalaf Abū Bishr narrated to us: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us: Ibn Jurayj informed us: Manṣūr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān told me, from his mother Ṣafiyyah, from Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr, who said: We set out with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) in the consecrated state. The Prophet said, “Whoever has a sacrificial animal should remain in the consecrated state, and whoever does not have one should leave it.” She said: I had no sacrificial animal, so I left the consecrated state; al-Zubayr had a sacrificial animal, so he did not leave it. I put on my clothes and came to al-Zubayr. He said, “Get away from me.” I said, “Are you afraid I might leap on you?”

Abū Muṣʿab narrated to us: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad al-Darāwardī narrated to us, from Rabīʿah ibn Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from al-Ḥārith ibn Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith, from his father, who said: I asked, “Messenger of God, is the transfer from Hajj to ʿumrah for us alone, or for all people?” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “For us alone.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, from his father, from Abū Dharr, who said: Tamattuʿ in Hajj was specifically for the Companions of Muḥammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, who said: My father told me: I said to ʿĀʾishah, “I do not think there is any blame on me for not performing the saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah.” She said: God says, «Indeed, al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah are among the symbols of God. So whoever makes pilgrimage to the House or performs ʿumrah, there is no blame upon him for going between them.» If it were as you say, it would read, “there is no blame upon him for not going between them.” Rather, this was revealed concerning some of the Anṣār: when they entered the consecrated state, they did so for Manāt, and they considered it impermissible to perform saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah. When they came with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Hajj, they mentioned that to him, and God revealed this verse. By my life, God, Mighty and Majestic, has not completed the Hajj of one who does not perform saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; they said: Wakīʿ narrated to us: Hishām al-Dastawāʾī narrated to us, from Budayl ibn Maysarah, from Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah, from the wife of Shaybah, who said: I saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) perform saʿy between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah while saying, “The al-Abṭaḥ is crossed only at a brisk pace.”

ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad and ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; they said: Wakīʿ narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Kathīr ibn Jumhān, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: If I jog between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, I have seen the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) jog; and if I walk, I have seen the Messenger of God walk. I am an old man.

Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us: al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā al-Khushanī narrated to us: ʿUmar ibn Qays narrated to us: Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā informed me, from his uncle Isḥāq ibn Ṭalḥah, from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, that he heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “Hajj is striving for God, and ʿumrah is voluntary.”

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Numayr narrated to us: Yaʿlā narrated to us: Ismāʿīl narrated to us. I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā say: We were with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) when he performed an ʿumrah. He circumambulated, and we circumambulated with him; he prayed, and we prayed with him. We shielded him from the people of Makkah so that no one could harm him.

Abū Kurayb narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Ādam narrated to us, from Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh, from al-Aʿmash, from Ḥabīb—that is, Ibn Abī Thābit—from ʿUrwah, who said: Ibn ʿUmar was asked in which month the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ʿumrah. He said, “In Rajab.” ʿĀʾishah said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) never performed ʿumrah in Rajab. Whenever he performed ʿumrah, Ibn ʿUmar was with him.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Abū Isḥāq al-Shāfiʿī, Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿUthmān ibn Shāfiʿ, narrated to us; they said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār: ʿAmr ibn Aws informed me: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him to have ʿĀʾishah ride behind him and take her to perform ʿumrah from al-Tanʿīm.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: We set out with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) for the Farewell Pilgrimage as the crescent of Dhū al-Ḥijjah appeared. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever among you wishes to enter the consecrated state for ʿumrah may do so. Were it not that I brought a sacrificial animal, I would have entered the consecrated state for ʿumrah.” Some of the people entered the state for ʿumrah and others for Hajj; I was among those who entered the state for ʿumrah. We set out and arrived in Makkah. The Day of ʿArafah came while I was menstruating and had not left the consecrated state for my ʿumrah. I complained about that to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, “Leave your ʿumrah, undo your hair, comb it, and enter the consecrated state for Hajj.” She said: I did so. On the night at al-Muḥaṣṣab, after God had completed our Hajj, he sent ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr with me. He had me ride behind him and went out to al-Tanʿīm, where I entered the consecrated state for ʿumrah. God thus completed our Hajj and ʿumrah; no sacrificial animal, charity, or fasting was required for that.

Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq: Sulaymān ibn Suḥaym told me, from Umm Ḥakīm bint Umayyah, from Umm Salamah, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever enters the consecrated state for ʿumrah from Bayt al-Maqdis will be forgiven.”
