Fasting

“A Bedouin came to the Prophet(ﷺ) and said: ‘I have seen the new crescent tonight.’ He said:‘Doyou bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped butAllahand that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?’ He said:‘Yes.’ Hesaid: ‘Get up, O Bilal, and announce to the peoplethat they shouldfast tomorrow.’” Abu 'Ali said: "This is how itwas narrated from Walid bin AbuThawr and Hasan bin 'Ali. It wasalso narrated from Hammad binSalamah, but he did not mentionIbn 'Abbas. He said: 'And heannounced that they shouldperform the prayer and that theyshould fast.'"

“My paternalunclesamong the Ansar who were among the Companions of the MessengerofAllah (ﷺ) told me: ‘The new crescent of Shawwal was covered withclouds, so we fasted the next day. Then some riders came at the endof the day and testified to the Prophet (ﷺ) that they had seen thenew crescent the night before. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commandedthem to break their fast and to go out to offer the ‘Eid prayer thefollowing morning.’”

‘When you see the new crescent, fast, and when you see it, stopfasting. If it is cloudy then calculate it (as thirty days).” Ibn‘Umar used to fast one day before the new crescent was seen.

“When you see the new crescent then fast, and when you see itthenstop fasting. If it is cloudy then fast thirty days.”

‘How much of the month has passed?” We said: “Twenty-two(days),and there are eight left.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said: “Themonth is like that, and the month is like that, (and themonth is likethat), three times, and he withheld one finger the lasttime.”

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘The month is like thatandlike that and like that,’ and he showed nine fingers on thethird timeto indicate twenty-nine.”

"(The months in which) We fasted twenty-nine days at the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), weremore than (the months in which) we fasted thirty days.

“Two months of ‘Eid whose rewardcannot be reduced (even if they are twenty-nine days): ‘RamadanandDhul-Hijjah.”

“Al-Fitr is the day when you break your fast and Al-Adha is thedaywhen you offer sacrifices.”

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)fasted while he was traveling, and he broke his fast.”

“Hamzah Al-Aslami asked theMessengerof Allah (ﷺ): ‘I am fasting, should I fast whiletraveling?’The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If you wish, thenfast, and ifyou wish, then break your fast.’”

“We were with the Messenger ofAllah (ﷺ) on one of his journeys on a hot day, and it was extremelyhot. A man would put his hand over his head because of the intenseheat. No one among the people was fasting except for the Messenger ofAllah (ﷺ) and ‘Abdullah bin Rawahah.”
